Gina Hinojosa Puts Affordability and Public Schools at Center of Texas Governor Campaign

Hinojosa Centers Gubernatorial Campaign on Affordability, Public Schools and Corporate Influence

Texas Democratic gubernatorial nominee Gina Hinojosa used the Texas Democratic Convention in Corpus Christi to formally outline the themes expected to define her campaign against Gov. Greg Abbott, placing affordability, public education and corporate influence at the center of her message.

Addressing delegates and later appearing in several national and statewide media interviews, Hinojosa argued that Texans are increasingly focused on everyday economic concerns rather than the cultural issues that have dominated political debate in recent years.

“Our agenda is simple,” Hinojosa said during the convention. “Save Texas schools and put money back in your pocket.”

Campaign Focuses on Cost of Living

Throughout the convention weekend, Hinojosa repeatedly emphasized affordability, arguing that housing costs, property taxes, healthcare expenses and public education funding should become the defining issues of the 2026 governor’s race.

She said both political parties have spent too much time debating cultural issues while failing to address whether Texans can afford to live and prosper in the state.

Her campaign has branded many of those economic concerns as the “Greg Abbott Corruption Tax,” alleging that special interests and wealthy donors have influenced state policy at the expense of working Texans.

Sharp Criticism of Abbott

Hinojosa used her convention speech to directly criticize Abbott’s record on public education, state contracts, economic development incentives and campaign fundraising.

She accused the governor of prioritizing wealthy donors over public schools and everyday Texans while pointing to school vouchers, no-bid contracts and large incentive packages for major corporations as examples of misplaced priorities.

Abbott has defended his education policies and school choice initiatives as expanding opportunities for Texas families while maintaining that his administration has strengthened the state’s economy and business climate.

Democratic Strategy for November

Speaking to delegates, Hinojosa said Democrats have an opportunity to compete in areas that have traditionally voted Republican by emphasizing economic issues rather than partisan divisions.

She pointed to recent Democratic gains in suburban communities and argued that voters are increasingly looking for alternatives as affordability concerns continue to grow.

Hinojosa also framed the election as a broader debate over whether government should primarily benefit everyday Texans or large corporate interests, urging Democrats to build a coalition beyond their traditional base.

Race for Governor Takes Shape

The convention marked one of Hinojosa’s highest-profile appearances since securing the Democratic nomination and offered a preview of the messaging likely to dominate the general election campaign.

While Republicans are expected to continue emphasizing border security, public safety and conservative social policies, Hinojosa signaled that her campaign intends to keep the conversation focused on affordability, public schools and economic opportunity as Texans head toward the November election.
