Back to School Events Continue as Families Prepare for the First Day of School
July is giving way to August, bringing a mix of summer concerts, community celebrations and back-to-school giveaways across town.
Families should also mark their calendars for the first day of classes: Northside ISD returns Aug. 10; San Antonio ISD and Judson ISD begin Aug. 12; North East ISD starts Aug. 17; and Alamo Heights ISD begins Aug. 19. Parents should also check with their child’s campus for orientation dates, meet-the-teacher events and updated school supply lists.

Thursday, July 30
Last Call: Summer Setlist at Hemisfair
Where: Civic Park at Hemisfair, 210 S. Alamo St. | When: Thursday, July 30 | 7–10 p.m.
Close out the week with another free evening of live music, local vendors, food and drinks at Civic Park. The outdoor series continues on select Thursday nights throughout the summer. Check the Summer Setlist schedule and event details.
Disco Alfresco: Cumbia Necia Night
Where: Sunken Garden Theater, 3875 N. St. Mary’s St. | When: Thursday, July 30 | 7–10 p.m.
Dance under the Texas sky during an open-air celebration of modern cumbia featuring Austin DJ Helios. The free event will blend traditional Latin rhythms with hip-hop, house, reggaetón and global club sounds, along with vendors, local dancers and family reunion-style energy.

Downtown Thursday

Explore downtown through a weekly lineup of music, arts, food, family activities and special offers from participating businesses. Visitors can also take advantage of free parking after 5 p.m. and a complimentary downtown circulator.

Saturday, August 1
Market Square Summer Bash
Where: Historic Market Square, 514 W. Commerce St. | When: Saturday, Aug. 1 | 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
Celebrate the final stretch of summer and the approaching school year with live entertainment, food, artisan vendors and children’s activities. School supplies will be distributed from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. while supplies last.
The city’s Department of Arts & Culture will also hold a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting for “The Spirit Within,” a new public mural on the north-facing wall of the Farmer’s Market Building near Commerce and San Saba streets. The celebration is free and open to the public. Click here for more details.
District 2 Back-to-School Fest

District 2 families can prepare for the new school year with backpack giveaways, vendors, free pizza and additional family activities. Supplies are reserved for District 2 residents, and registration is required at d2bts26.eventbrite.com.
Back-to-School Splash Bash
Where: Kennedy Park Pool, 3299 SW 28th St. | When: Saturday, Aug. 1 | 1–3 p.m.

Celebrate the final days of summer break with swimming, refreshments and games offering children the chance to win backpacks filled with school supplies. The event is free, and appropriate swimwear is required. Children younger than 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Last Call: Disco Alfresco: Island Heat

Five hundred students can receive free backpacks filled with school supplies during Texas’ tax-free weekend. Families can also enjoy free haircuts, face painting, balloons, snacks and child-safety kits. The event is free and open to the community while supplies last.
