School Is Back In Session, But the Community Calendar Keeps Going
With school back in session across San Antonio, the calendar may look a little lighter as families settle back into new routines.
Nevertheless, this week brings another finding of free live music downtown, Mission Marquee outdoor film, a family nature walk, a glow dance party and more.
Sunday also puts Black history and local legacy center stage with MAAFA SERUDJ-TA at the Carver and The House on Cherry Street, a new production centered on the Sutton family’s East Side history. Residents can also weigh in on the City’s proposed FY2027 budget as a series of town halls begins Aug. 17.
San Antonio’s regular outdoor pool season has ended, but seven city pools remain open on weekends from 1 to 8 p.m. through Labor Day, Sept. 7. Meanwhile, the city’s seven splash pads remain open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October.

Nine O’Clock Nature Walk: Animal Evidence
Where: Salado Outdoor Classroom at Phil Hardberger Park, 13203 Blanco Road | When: Saturday, Aug. 15 | 9–10 a.m.
Families can walk the one-mile Water Loop while searching for tracks and other evidence of wildlife with a provided scavenger hunt. The route includes paved and natural-surface trails. Participants should bring water. Click here to learn more and review details.
Farmers and Artisans Market
Where: Mission Marquee Plaza, 3100 Roosevelt Ave. | When: Saturday, Aug. 15 | 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

“A Minecraft Movie” at Mission Marquee Plaza
Where: Mission Marquee Plaza, 3100 Roosevelt Ave. | When: Saturday, Aug. 15 | 7–10:30 p.m.
Bring blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic for a free outdoor screening of “A Minecraft Movie” on Mission Marquee Plaza’s original 1948 jumbo screen. Super Fun Saturday: Glow Dance Party

MAAFA SERUDJ-TA: A Story of African American History

Community members can use the Wheatley Heights Sports Complex for free during designated open-play hours. The track is available weekday mornings, while the track and field open together Wednesday evenings for additional community recreation.
