Serena Williams to Play Doubles with Sister Venus at Cincinnati Open After Wimbledon Injury
Serena and Venus Williams are preparing to share the court again as the legendary sisters continue building toward the U.S. Open.
According to PEOPLE, Cincinnati Open organizers announced Monday that Serena and Venus received a wild-card entry into the women’s doubles field. The tournament begins next week in Mason, Ohio.
The appearance will mark the first time the sisters have competed together since losing their opening-round doubles match at the 2022 U.S. Open. It will also be their first time playing doubles together at the Cincinnati hard-court tournament.
Williams Sisters Resume Longtime Partnership
Serena and Venus were previously awarded a doubles wild card for Wimbledon, but Serena was forced to withdraw because of an injury.
The Cincinnati Open will give them another opportunity to revive one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history.
Together, the sisters have won 14 Grand Slam doubles championships and three Olympic gold medals. Their major titles include six Wimbledon championships and two U.S. Open titles.
Their return comes during Serena’s latest chapter in professional tennis. The 44-year-old recently played her first singles match in nearly four years at Wimbledon, where she was eliminated in the opening round.
Serena had stepped away from professional competition following the 2022 U.S. Open but announced her return earlier this summer.
Cincinnati Appearance Comes Ahead Of U.S. Open
Venus, 46, has remained active as she prepares for another appearance at the U.S. Open in New York later this month.
She is scheduled to compete in mixed doubles alongside Alexander Bublik.
The Cincinnati tournament now gives the sisters an important hard-court test before the season’s final Grand Slam. The event is part of the U.S. Open Series and traditionally serves as one of the final major tune-ups before competition begins in New York.
Although Serena and Venus have competed in Cincinnati individually, this will be the first time they have entered the tournament as a doubles team.
Their reunion adds another highly anticipated stop to Serena’s comeback and gives tennis fans another opportunity to watch two of the sport’s most accomplished champions compete side by side.
