Gunfire Outside Eastside Field Office Leaves One Person Grazed as McKee-Rodriguez Moves to Strengthen Security
Gunfire erupted outside San Antonio City Councilmember Jalen McKee-Rodriguez’s Eastside field office Thursday following an altercation nearby, prompting the District 2 office to review its security measures.
McKee-Rodriguez said no staff members, office visitors or children affected by the Aug. 6 incident suffered serious injuries. One person was grazed by gunfire.
“Earlier today, a shooting occurred outside my eastside field office following an altercation nearby,” McKee-Rodriguez said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful that no members of my staff, visitors to our office, or the children impacted by the incident suffered serious injuries.”
He also thanked the San Antonio Police Department and first responders for their response.
District 2 Office Plans Security Changes
McKee-Rodriguez said his office will review and strengthen security at the field office following the shooting.
Staff members who witnessed the incident will also receive at least one day off while the councilmember’s office connects them with additional resources and support.
“The safety of our team and everyone who visits our office is my highest priority,” McKee-Rodriguez said.
The councilmember said the shooting also underscores the need for strategies aimed at preventing violence before it occurs. “This incident is also a painful reminder that public safety requires more than reacting after violence occurs,” he said.
McKee-Rodriguez called for continued investment in violence interruption, mental health services, youth opportunities and conflict resolution while ensuring first responders have the resources needed to protect the community.
His office said it will continue working with law enforcement as the investigation moves forward.
“Our office will continue working closely with law enforcement as their investigation continues, and we remain committed to building a District 2 where every resident, family, and employee feels safe.”
