The New Gym Is Taking Shape as Sam Houston High School Students Prepare to Return Aug. 12, While Broader Renovations Continue
With the first day of school approaching, Sam Houston High School’s long-awaited competition gym appears nearly ready to welcome students and athletes.
Recent images shared by the Sam Houston Hurricane basketball program offer a look inside the new facility, showing a polished court, completed seating areas and other finishing touches taking shape. The team described the post as a “sneak peek” at the Hurricanes’ new home ahead of the 2026-27 basketball season.

The gym represents one of the largest and most visible pieces of a $45 million renovation project funded through SAISD’s voter-approved 2020 bond program.
New Gym Will Serve More Than Basketball Players
The competition gym will provide a new home for Sam Houston basketball while also giving students a larger facility for athletic programs, school activities, physical education and campus gatherings.
For the Hurricane basketball program, the opening marks a significant change after years of construction. The team said the new gym will allow players to continue the school’s winning tradition in a new home during the upcoming season.
Although the gym looks close to completion, SAISD has not confirmed. The district’s current bond project tracker still lists Sam Houston High School as under construction.
It also remains unclear how many of the other planned improvements will be ready for students on the first day of school.
Bond Project Includes Athletic, Arts and Student Spaces
The renovation began with a ceremonial “wall-breaking” event in May 2024, when students and district leaders used sledgehammers instead of traditional groundbreaking shovels to mark the start of the work.
Along with the new competition gym, the $45 million project includes renovated locker and training rooms, a new weight room and mat room, an athletic concourse and renovations to the school’s existing gym.
Plans also call for a renovated auditorium, a new gallery and black box theater, an expanded dance studio, a new student entrance, learning stairs and additional concourse space.
The district originally projected that the full renovation would be completed in fall 2026. While the new gym appears to be entering its final stages, SAISD has not released a detailed public update identifying which other facilities have been completed or providing an opening date for each space.
