The Historic Westside Hosts a Day of Culture, Music, and Community May 9

The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, in partnership with the Westside Preservation Alliance and the Historic Westside Residents’ Association, will host the 17th Annual Paseo por El Westside on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The free, family-friendly event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Rinconcito de Esperanza, located at 816 S. Colorado St.

Music Led by National Heritage Fellows

This year’s lineup features nationally recognized artists, including Belen Escobedo, recently honored by the National Endowment for the Arts. She is joined by fellow honorees Blanquita “Blanca Rosa” Rodriguez and Eva Ybarra.

Performance Schedule:

  • 10 a.m.: Conjunto Heritage Taller
  • 11 a.m.: Belen Escobedo y Panfilo’s Güera
  • 12 p.m.: Blanca Rosa Rodriguez with Henry Gómez y Mariachi Esperanza
  • 12:30 p.m.: Mariachi del Sol
  • 1 p.m.: Eddie “Lalo” Torres y Su Conjunto
  • 2 p.m.: Las Chulas with Eva Ybarra

Workshops, Food, and Family Activities

The Paseo offers hands-on workshops and activities for all ages, including juegos, sombrero and kite-making, flower crafting, and piñata building. Visitors can also enjoy poetry readings and food demonstrations such as raspa-making and a pan dulce workshop.

Attendees can also explore the Museo del Westside to learn about the neighborhood’s history and the families who lived there.

A Community Gathering With Purpose

Organizers say the event is both educational and celebratory, inviting the community to reconnect with traditions while supporting preservation efforts. Paseo por El Westside continues to highlight the importance of protecting the Historic Westside through storytelling, culture, and community connection.
