Who’s Backing Who in Bexar DA Runoff: Davis vs. Chapa

Endorsements from Officials and Organizations Highlight Key Contrasts Between Davis and Chapa in the Bexar County DA Runoff

With the primaries now a part of recent history, we are looking toward another battle for the Democratic nomination for Bexar County District Attorney, coming to a May 26th runoff between candidates Jane Davis and Luz Elena Chapa, neither of whom received more than fifty percent of the votes cast in the March primary.

DA Candidate Jane Davis

Candidate Davis has completed forty years of experience within the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office, with her most recent role being Chief of the Juvenile Division. In campaign materials, Ms. Davis reflects that she’s running because she “has spent her entire career serving the people who rely on our justice system to be fair, effective and worthy of their trust.” She further indicates that “public safety has shaped (my) career” and has given her a clear understanding of the responsibility that comes with leading the DA’s office, adding that “it’s an important role in protecting and serving the community” and that she wants to lead with fairness, integrity, and steady judgment because that’s what Bexar County deserves.

Major components of her campaign include: fairness and justice, victim support, law enforcement collaboration, strengthening the DA’s office, thoughtful reform, and fiscal responsibility. She supports fairness while following constitutional requirements and a “respect for the rule of law, without politics.”

Davis’ Endorsements

Endorsements have come from former challengers Meli Carrion Powers, Jim Bethke, and Veronica Legaretta, as well as the San Antonio Express. Her priorities include leading a well-run District Attorney’s Office that serves the people of Bexar County with integrity and professionalism.

DA Candidate Luz Elena Chapa

Davis’ endorsements reflect support from former opponents and local community-aligned voices.

Luz Elena Chapa has served as an appeals court judge for twelve years, from 2013 to 2025, having authored over 1,400 opinions, including nearly 600 on criminal cases, and was a panel member on thousands more, per campaign materials.

ICYMI: ‘Attack’ Claim in DA Runoff Race

As District Attorney, Luz Elena Chapa will “bring her proven experience, leadership and knowledge of the law to work and to make Bexar County safer and ensure justice is done.” Her plans of action include:

Advocacy for victims, help reduce domestic violence, addressing the backlog of unprosecuted cases, and ensuring prosecutors are trauma-informed and trained.

Chapa’s Endorsements

Endorsements have come from County Commissioner Justin Rodriguez, Sheriff Javier Salazar, as well as from the San Antonio Police Officers Association and the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County. The candidate has also expressed that “the people want fresh new leadership to restore trust and integrity to the DA’s office,” while her endorsements to date have come from organizations and elected officials.

This race appears to be a close one—far from a toss-up. The final word will come from the voters, who will have the opportunity to support the people’s choice or the police. As we have previously stated: elections have benefits and consequences. I trust that voters choose the former as opposed to the latter.

Election Day is May 26th with early voting from May 18-22, 2026 Visit Bexar County Elections for more information, polling locations and times.
