“How Much You Need, Spirit?” Black Travelers And Customers React To The News That Spirit Airlines May Be Headed For Demise
Spirit Airlines, long known for its ultra low fares and no frills travel experience, may be approaching the end of its run as financial pressures continue to build.
After filing for bankruptcy twice since 2024, the budget carrier had been expected to emerge from restructuring later this year. But new reports suggest that plan may be unraveling. According to internal communications and company documents reviewed by Reuters, Spirit could be forced to liquidate within days as rising jet fuel costs and ongoing financial struggles weigh heavily on the airline.
Liquidation, in this case, would likely mean selling off assets and shutting down operations entirely, marking a dramatic end for a company that has struggled to turn a profit since the COVID 19 pandemic.
Federal Attention and Uncertain Future
The situation has drawn attention from federal officials. On April 21, President Donald Trump publicly called for intervention, suggesting that a buyer or even government support could help preserve the airline and its workforce.
“I’d love somebody to buy Spirit. It’s 14,000 jobs, and maybe the federal government should help that one out,” Trump said during an interview with CNBC.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also indicated the issue is under review, stating that the Department of Transportation is “taking a look” at the airline following the president’s comments.
Despite the growing concern, Spirit has not issued a formal statement addressing the reports. Internally, employees have been told that operations are continuing as normal, even as the company has already begun scaling back service in certain locations.
What A Shutdown Could Mean For Travelers
The potential collapse of Spirit Airlines could have ripple effects across the broader travel industry. Aviation experts warn that the disappearance of a major ultra low cost carrier would likely reduce price competition, particularly on domestic routes.
Without Spirit’s deeply discounted fares, airlines may face less pressure to offer budget options, which could lead to higher ticket prices overall. For many travelers, especially younger passengers and families looking for affordable options, that shift could limit access to air travel.
Since its rebranding in 1992, Spirit has built its reputation on offering some of the lowest fares in the industry, often appealing to passengers willing to trade comfort for cost savings.

Passengers React With Humor and Frustration
News of the airline’s possible shutdown has triggered a wide range of reactions online. Some longtime customers expressed disappointment, sharing stories about how Spirit made travel possible during tight financial moments.
“Spirit Airlines may be closing its doors forever,” one user wrote on Threads. “I’m devastated.”
Others took a more lighthearted approach, with group chats and social media posts filled with jokes about pooling money to keep the airline afloat. Comedian Jasmine Ellis posted a video asking, “How much you need, Spirit?” while referencing the low cost flights many relied on over the years.
At the same time, critics of the airline pointed to long standing frustrations with added fees and limited amenities. Some passengers said their experiences with baggage charges and onboard conditions left them unsurprised by the company’s struggles.
Unanswered Questions For Upcoming Travel Plans
For travelers with upcoming flights, uncertainty remains. With no official announcement from the airline, it is unclear how potential liquidation could affect scheduled trips or refunds.
If Spirit does cease operations, it would mark the loss of one of the most recognizable names in budget travel and could signal a broader shift in how affordable flying is defined in the United States.
