Netflix is preparing to welcome a new class back to Hillman College.
The streaming platform announced Wednesday that the revival of “A Different World” will premiere this fall, around the same time many real life freshmen begin their college journeys.
In a teaser poster shared on social media, Netflix nodded to one of the original show’s most recognizable images: Dwayne Wayne’s flip glasses. The poster also featured the tagline, “Welcome Back To Hillman.”

A New Generation Heads To Hillman
Netflix has not yet announced an exact premiere date, but the upcoming series will include 10 episodes.
The revival will center on Deborah Wayne, played by Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the youngest child of Dwayne Wayne, played by Kadeem Hardison, and Whitley Gilbert Wayne, played by Jasmine Guy.
Her story follows a well meaning, free spirited young woman trying to build her own identity at the fictional HBCU while also navigating the legacy left behind by her famous parents.
Original Cast Members Return
As Hillman welcomes a new generation of students, the revival will also bring back several familiar faces from the original NBC series, which aired from 1987 to 1993.

Returning cast members include Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Charnele Brown as Dr. Kimberly Reese Boyer, Jenifer Lewis as Professor Davenport, Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson Taylor, Glynn Turman as Col. Bradford Taylor, Karen Malina White as Charmaine Brown and Ajai Sanders as Gina Deveaux.
The return of those characters gives the revival a direct connection to the original series while opening the door for new storylines centered on today’s college experience.
Debbie Allen And Felicia Pride Lead Revival
The series will be executive produced by Felicia Pride and Debbie Allen, both of whom are connected to the show’s creative legacy.
Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince Bythewood, who both wrote on the original series, will also serve as executive producers.
The revival recently wrapped production in Atlanta. The news comes as Allen was also announced as the commencement speaker for Clark Atlanta University’s 2026 graduating class.
