American Legion Posts And Chi Eta Phi Host San Antonio Blood Drive

Posts 592, 828 Partner with Nursing Sorority to Host Joint Blood Drive

SAN ANTONIO – (May 2, 2026) – In support of The American Legion Blood Donor Program, Sesquicentennial American Legion Post 592 and Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 partnered with Theta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., to host a blood drive at Post 592’s location near Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston.

“Donating blood is important because it helps save lives,” said Post 828 Commander Amanda Parham, a member of Theta Eta Chapter. “Since blood cannot be manufactured, hospitals and clinics depend on generous donors, and as legionnaires, we must do our part to maintain a sufficient supply of blood.”

More than 15 units of blood were collected.  Prior to giving blood, each donor was given a brief confidential health screening to verify their eligibility to donate blood.

According to Post 592 Commander Randall Remaley, a single blood donation can help more than one person, making it a simple but powerful way to support the community.

“Blood donations are needed daily in every city and county throughout Texas,” said Remaley. “Not only did members donate blood, but also members of the public who saw the South Texas Blood & Tissue bus in our parking lot.”

Partnering with Theta Eta Chapter and American Legion Posts 592 and 828 was especially important because it fostered meaningful collaboration with military members, veterans, and their families while addressing a critical healthcare need within the community said Theta Eta Chapter President Carmen Woods-Franklin.

“This partnership created an opportunity to honor and support those who have served our country by engaging them in a life-saving community initiative,” said Woods-Franklin, a member of Fred Brock Auxiliary Unit 828.  “It also strengthened relationships between healthcare professionals and veteran organizations, promoting unity, service, education, and advocacy.”

According to the Red Cross, a healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days or double red blood cells every 112 days. Platelets can be donated as few as seven days apart but a maximum of 24 times a year.

By joining forces, Posts 592, 828 and Theta Eta Chapter demonstrated their commitment to “Veterans Serving America” and Service for Humanity” to improve community health outcomes, increase awareness of blood donation needs, and encourage ongoing collaboration between veteran service organizations and the nursing profession.
