The San Antonio Observer Joins National Efforts Celebrating Local News Day Today
Today, April 9, newsrooms and communities across the country are marking Local News Day — a national day of action celebrating the trusted local news and information that helps communities stay informed and connected.
Local News Day is built around a simple idea: Start Local.
The Stories Closest to Home
At a time when national headlines dominate our feeds, it’s easy to overlook the news taking place outside our doors. But the most important news is close to home: the decisions affecting local schools, the businesses opening on Main Street, the community events bringing neighbors together, and the policies shaping our towns and cities.

That’s the work we try to cover every day at The San Antonio Observer.
More Than Headlines
Local news is common ground. It’s the rare place where the story isn’t red vs. blue — it’s what’s happening right here and what it means for your family. When we share facts about our community, it’s easier to disagree without disconnecting.
And local news is more than headlines. It’s the information people rely on to understand their community and participate in civic life. It helps us stay connected and celebrate the stories that make our home unique.
A Role in the Community
Community is why The San Antonio Observer is proud to participate in Local News Day.

The San Antonio Area Foundation’s Community Engagement team stopped by on April 9 to deliver baskets and capture photos in recognition of Local News Day. We appreciate their support of local news and the vital role it plays in keeping our communities informed and connected.
The San Antonio Observer Columnists
The San Antonio Observer’s columnists bring distinct voices and lived perspective to their work, reporting weekly to inform and stay connected to the communities they serve:

- Waseem Ali — Sports
- Gordon Benjamin — Elections
- Alana Zarriello — Humanities
- Fernando Rover Jr. — Current Events
- Mario Marcel Salas — Black History
- Connor Wiley — Entertainment
- Ghaliyah Ali — Criminal Justice
Together, they deliver consistent, community rooted reporting each week, covering everything from policy and history to culture and sports, inviting readers to engage with voices that don’t just report on the community, but are of the community.
