Keith David Honored With Hollywood Walk Of Fame Star After Decades In Film, TV And Animation

Veteran actor and voiceover legend Keith David was honored Thursday with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking a major milestone in a career that has stretched across nearly five decades.

David received the star in the Motion Pictures category during an 11:30 a.m. ceremony near the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The honor, fittingly, arrived on his 70th birthday.

The Emmy-winning actor has built one of the most recognizable careers in Hollywood, moving seamlessly between drama, comedy, horror, animation, documentaries and voiceover work. His deep voice alone has become part of the culture, but his résumé proves he has never relied on one lane.

Several familiar names were on hand to celebrate David, including actor and producer Ryan Bathe, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Lynn Whitfield, filmmaker John Carpenter and actor John C. McGinley.

The speakers reflected the range of David’s career and the professional relationships he has built along the way.

David and Carpenter worked together on two of the director’s most well-known films: the 1982 sci-fi horror classic “The Thing” and the 1988 cult favorite “They Live.”

McGinley and David also share a long history on screen, appearing together in films including “Platoon,” “Article 99,” “The Last Outlaw” and “Johns.”

Whitfield and David later became familiar to television audiences as Bishop James Greenleaf and Lady Mae Greenleaf on OWN’s “Greenleaf,” the church drama that aired from 2016 to 2020. The two also appeared together in the 2016 historical drama “North Star.”

From Juilliard To Hollywood Icon

A New York City native, David began his formal training at the High School of Performing Arts before continuing at the Juilliard School.

Over the years, he has earned Screen Actors Guild and Tony Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award and three Emmy Awards.

His film credits include “There’s Something About Mary,” “Nope,” “American Fiction,” “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” and the upcoming “My New Friend Jim.” On television, David appears in FX’s “The Lowdown” and has also had roles in “Abbott Elementary” and “Community.” His voiceover career is just as celebrated. David won Emmy Awards for his narration work in Ken Burns’ documentaries “The War,” “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson” and “Jackie Robinson.”

He has also voiced characters in animated favorites including “Gargoyles,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Rick and Morty” and “Hazbin Hotel.”

Keith David’s Star Becomes No. 2,847

David’s dedication is listed as the 2,847th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The announcement of his honor was first made in 2025, when David shared an emotional Instagram video reacting to the news that he had been selected for the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2026.

“What a surprise! Being blessed to get to do this for a living is enough for me; to be recognized for my contribution to the arts is the cherry on top,” David wrote at the time, thanking the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and his wife, Dionne Lea.

After nearly 50 years of memorable performances, David’s star puts a permanent marker on what audiences already knew: his work has long been part of Hollywood history.
