Federal Authorities Arrested Journalist Don Lemon After Ice Protest Coverage Connected to a Church Demonstration
Former CNN host Don Lemon was arrested and charged with several federal offenses following his coverage of an ICE protest demonstration that is said to have interrupted a Sunday Service at a local church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Writer Natalie Neysa Alund, in her 2026 article for USA Today, “What We Know About The Church Protest That Led To Don Lemon’s Arrest”, writes, “Former CNN anchor Don Lemon, who was covering immigration enforcement operations in the state before his arrest, is among two reporters arrested, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed in a post on X on Jan. 30… ‘Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles last night, where he was covering the Grammy Awards,’ a statement posted on Lemon’s Instagram page on Jan. 30 reads. ‘Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done.’”
Conspiracy to Deprive Rights?
Lemon has been charged with conspiracy to deprive rights and interfering with religious freedoms. Sources from both the BBC and New York Times claim that protesters had mentioned the pastor was an ICE enforcement agent. Following his release, Lemon maintains he was simply doing what journalists do – capture the truth of what Americans are feeling, saying, and doing. Several of the protesters are also facing criminal charges.
What Lemon’s Arrest Raises for Journalists Covering Protests
Lemon’s arrest has raised broader questions about how journalists covering protests are treated by federal authorities, and whether current enforcement practices create new risks for reporters doing constitutionally protected work.
Minnesota has become a hot bed for political and civil unrest following the killings of Renee Good, 37, and Alex Pretti, 37. ICE agents have been making local and global headlines following many carried out arrests of undocumented immigrants. The Trump administration has come under much scrutiny for their handling of the arrests and the controversy that has ensued. Writer Julia Manchester, in her 2026 article for The Hill, “Trump Says Don Lemon’s Arrest Is ‘The Best Thing That Could Have Happened To Him’”, writes, “President Trump responded to former CNN anchor Don Lemon’s arrest by federal authorities last week, telling reporters it was probably ‘the best thing that could have happened to him’…’No, I don’t know anything about the Don Lemon thing,’ Trump said when asked by The Hill on Air Force One Saturday whether he had any knowledge of Lemon’s arrest before it took place last week.”
Don Lemon maintains he will continue to report on the ICE raids and ensures coverage of the political unrest continues to make headlines.
