5 Moments That Put Family, Legacy And Emotion Center Stage
The 2026 NBA Draft gave the league its newest class of stars, but the night was about more than basketball.
On Tuesday, June 23, the first round of the draft was held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where AJ Dybantsa became the No. 1 overall pick after the Washington Wizards selected the former BYU standout. His selection marked the beginning of a freshman-heavy draft night, with the first eight players chosen all coming off their first college seasons.
Dybantsa was followed by Darryn Peterson, who went No. 2 to the Utah Jazz; Cameron Boozer, who landed with the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 3; Caleb Wilson, who went No. 4 to the Chicago Bulls; Keaton Wagler, who was selected No. 5 by the Los Angeles Clippers; Mikel Brown Jr., who went No. 6 to the Brooklyn Nets; Darius Acuff Jr., who was picked No. 7 by the Sacramento Kings; and Kingston Flemings, who went No. 8 to the Atlanta Hawks.
“It’s just super surreal. It’s how you envision it when you’re a kid, and you just think about getting drafted,” Dybantsa said of the milestone.
But beyond the suits, handshakes with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and life-changing phone calls, the night belonged just as much to the families who helped carry these players to the stage. From fathers getting their flowers to mothers receiving tearful embraces, the 2026 NBA Draft delivered several moments that reminded fans why draft night still hits different.
AJ Dybantsa Honors His Father As The No. 1 Pick
Dybantsa’s first big moment as the top pick came before he even stepped across the stage.
When the Wizards selected him first overall, he asked Silver to announce him by his full name, Anicet Dybantsa Jr., instead of simply calling him AJ. The gesture was a public tribute to his father, Anicet Dybantsa Sr., known as Ace, who Dybantsa said made major sacrifices to support his basketball dreams.

“You guys can still call me AJ,” Dybantsa told reporters after being drafted. “I wanted Adam to call me ‘Anicet’ because I also wanted to honor my dad. His name is Anicet Dybantsa Sr. and he goes by ‘Ace.’ Without him, I wouldn’t be here today.”
Dybantsa also made a statement with his draft-night look, wearing an all-black suit embroidered with flowers and a rainbow watch that added color to the milestone moment.

AJ Dybantsa And Darryn Peterson’s Families Share A Full-Circle Embrace
Dybantsa and Peterson have been linked on the court for years, building a friendly rivalry that helped push both players toward the top of the draft.
One of their most memorable matchups saw the two young stars combine for 107 points, making it fitting that they would stand together at the top of the 2026 class. Dybantsa went first to Washington, and Peterson followed at No. 2 to Utah.
After Peterson’s name was called, his father walked over and embraced Dybantsa’s father, creating one of the night’s most heartfelt scenes. It was a quiet but powerful reminder that behind every rivalry, ranking and highlight reel, families are living the journey too.
Cameron Boozer Continues A Family Basketball Legacy
Cameron Boozer’s selection at No. 3 by the Memphis Grizzlies marked the next chapter in one of basketball’s most recognizable family legacies.
His father, former NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer, jumped to his feet in celebration when Cameron’s name was called. But Cameron’s mother, CeCe Boozer, also became one of the night’s standouts as she celebrated the moment with pride and style.

“I think it’s really just faith over fear,” CeCe said during an interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters. “So we battle that adversity as a family and now we get to celebrate as a family and be here to watch Cameron. I just couldn’t be more proud.”
For the Boozer family, draft night was not just about carrying a famous last name. It was about watching the next generation earn his own place in the league.
Yaxel Lendeborg Breaks Down In His Mother’s Arms
One of the most emotional moments of the night came after the Golden State Warriors selected Michigan standout Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick.
After hearing his name called, Lendeborg found his mother, Yissel Raposo, and broke down in her arms. The embrace carried even deeper meaning because Raposo, whom Lendeborg has called his “guardian angel” and hero, is battling stage 4 appendix cancer.
“This moment is for her,” Lendeborg said.
It was one of those draft-night scenes that needed no extra explanation. The hug said enough.
Mikel Brown Jr. Gives Brooklyn A New Face Of The Future
The Brooklyn Nets used the No. 6 pick to select Mikel Brown Jr., giving the franchise its highest draft selection in 16 years.
The 6-foot-5 guard arrives in Brooklyn after a freshman season that kept him on the radar of scouts, analysts and fans. For a Nets organization searching for a new direction, Brown’s arrival gives the team a young and exciting player to build around.

While the night was filled with emotional family moments, Brown’s selection also carried a different kind of weight. It offered Brooklyn fans a reason to look ahead.
A Draft Night Built On More Than Basketball
The 2026 NBA Draft introduced the next wave of league talent, but its strongest moments came away from the scouting reports.
Dybantsa honored his father. Peterson and Dybantsa’s families shared a full-circle moment. The Boozers celebrated another chapter in their basketball story. Lendeborg gave his mother a moment that will outlive any box score. Brown gave Brooklyn a new face for the future.
The league has its next class. And this year, family had the best seat in the house.
