Tiger Woods DUI Crash is Impacting His Future

Tiger Woods Arrested After Florida Rollover Crash Days Following First Competition Since 2024

Police are investigating a car crash involving 15 time major golf champion Tiger Woods on Friday.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods, 50, was following a pressure washer vehicle in his Land Rover SUV when he hit the back of the vehicle and landed on the driver’s side door. Woods showed signs of impairment after crawling through the passenger side door, according to officers. After undergoing roadside tests, he was placed under arrest.

Per Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek, Woods was charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit after officers attempted to conduct a urine test. Under Florida law, those arrested on suspicion of DUI must be held in jail for at least eight hours before they can be released on bond.

“This could have been a lot worse,” Budensiek said.

No injuries were reported in the crash.

Budensiek said Woods appeared lethargic at the scene. Woods agreed to a breath test that showed “triple zeroes,” indicating no alcohol in his system.

Investigators believe medication or another substance may have contributed to the impairment. Because Woods refused a urine test, authorities said they may never determine exactly what caused it.

Crash Comes Days After Return to Competition

Woods had not played on the PGA Tour since the 2024 British Open and had not completed four rounds of competitive golf since the 2024 Masters.

He recently returned to competition earlier in the week, playing for his Jupiter Links team in The Golf League finals. His team lost to the Los Angeles Golf Club.

The crash comes as Woods was weighing a potential return to the PGA Tour at the 2026 Masters, which begins April 9.

History of Injuries and Previous Incidents

This marks Woods’ second arrest in nine years and follows a 2017 DUI related incident, where he later pleaded guilty to reckless driving. Toxicology reports at the time showed a mix of medications, not alcohol.

The latest crash is also the fourth major car accident involving Woods since 2009.

In 2021, Woods was seriously injured in a high speed rollover crash in California that left him with severe leg injuries and required multiple surgeries. He later said amputation was considered.

Despite returning to win the Masters in 2019 after years of injuries, Woods has struggled to regain consistent form. He has played limited events in recent years and has not been competitive across full tournaments.

Uncertain Future On and Off the Course

Woods was recently considering major decisions about his career, including a possible return to the Masters and a potential role as U.S. Ryder Cup captain in 2027.

Now, those decisions are on hold as he faces legal proceedings tied to the latest arrest.

The PGA Tour and Woods’ management have not commented publicly on the incident.

Woods, one of the most influential figures in golf history with 82 career wins, remains a central figure in the sport even as questions continue about his future.
