Starbucks Store Redesign: 1,000 Coffeehouses Getting a Refresh
Starbucks is redesigning more than 1,000 stores by the end of 2026, part of its “Back to Starbucks” plan under CEO Brian Niccol. The company says the goal is to revive what made Starbucks unique—“a welcoming coffeehouse where people gather.”
Niccol explained,
“We found pickup-only stores to be overly transactional and lacking the warmth and human connection that defines our brand.”
What Customers Will See
The redesigns won’t be identical but will share common features:
• Softer seating and cozier layouts
• Warmer colors and inviting textures
• Redesigned espresso bars
• Better pickup flow
• Local touches to reflect each community
Starbucks compared the look to a “living room outside your home.”
Pickup-Only Stores Ending
By 2026, Starbucks will phase out its 80–90 pickup-only stores nationwide. Some will close, while others will be converted to traditional coffeehouses.
The first refreshed stores have already opened in New York City and Southern California, showing the blend of comfort and efficiency Starbucks hopes will restore its community feel.
