San Antonio’s Red-Hot Run Continued Monday Night, Combining a Blowout Win with a Division-Clinching Moment
The red hot Spurs took their talents to South Beach and defeated Miami 136-111 Monday night in Miami. The win marked the Sixth straight for the Silver and Black as they make their push towards the post season.
Southwest Division Title
With the win and Houston’s 132-124 loss to Chicago, the Spurs clinched the Southwest Division title. They clinched a playoff berth following last week’s win at home against Phoenix. The team is a league best 22-2 since the start of February.
V-Dub continued his dominance with a game high 26 points in Monday’s win. He also had 15 rebounds, four assists, and five blocks. It was the fourth time this season that he finished a game with at least 26 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks; the rest of the league has one such game…..combined. Zach Edey of the Grizzlies did it in November.
The team got 68 points from their bench including 21 apiece from Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper. Stephon Castle chipped in 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in the win.
Norman Powell scored 21 off the bench to lead the Heat. Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro each scored 18 for Miami, which has dropped five straight. The Heat allowed 76 points in the first half and rested their starters in the fourth quarter. The Heat are 1-5 since Bam Adebayo’s historic 83 point game against the Wizards.
This Year’s MVP- Wembanyama
After Monday’s win V-Dub made his arguments as to why he’s this year’s MVP.
“My first one would be that defense is 50% of the game and that it is undervalued so far in the MVP race. I believe I’m the most impactful player defensively in the league,” Wembanyama said. “Second argument would be that we almost swept OKC in the season, and we dominated them three times with their real team. … The third argument would be that offense impact is not just points.”
His post game comments are backed up by his on-court dominance. Over the last 10 games the Frenchman has averaged 29 points on 52% shooting from the field and 40% from long distance. He’s also averaging 11 rebounds and a little over three blocks per game.
It’s his effects on both sides of the ball that make the Spurs heavy favorites to win it all this year in my opinion.
With just ten games remaining in the regular season the Spurs (54-18) remain three games back of Oklahoma City (57-15) in the race for the NBA’s best overall record and number 1 seed in the Western Conference. The Thunder beat Philadelphia on Monday for their 12th consecutive win. The Thunder are the only other Western Conference team to clinch a playoff spot.
