Nolan Xavier Wells’ Family Retains Ben Crump As They Continue To Search For Answers

Legal Team Launches Independent Review and Seeks Records, Witness Accounts and Autopsy Findings

The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells has retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump as questions continue to surround the Mississippi teen’s death following a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island.

The move marks a significant new development in the case, with Crump announcing that his team will seek a thorough and transparent investigation into what happened to Wells. The family’s legal team is expected to press for access to investigative records, witness accounts and autopsy findings while independently reviewing the circumstances surrounding his death.

“Nolan Wells was a beloved son, teammate and friend who went out to celebrate the Fourth of July and never came home,” Crump said in a statement. “His family deserves answers. They deserve the truth.”

“We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves,” he added.

Family Turns to Ben Crump as Investigation Continues

Wells disappeared July 4 after traveling with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

He was last seen around 3 p.m. and did not return home with the group. His mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing that night, setting off a multi-agency search involving local authorities, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and volunteer search groups.

On July 6, a park ranger located a body near the northwestern end of Horn Island. Wells’ family later publicly confirmed his death as authorities continued the formal identification process and investigation.

The family’s decision to retain Crump came as an autopsy was scheduled and national attention intensified around the case.

Crump’s office said the Wells family is calling for a “thorough and transparent investigation” into how the Ocean Springs student-athlete died. His legal team is also expected to review evidence and information surrounding the case as the family pushes for clarity.

Questions Remain About Nolan Wells’ Final Hours

The circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance have fueled widespread questions and social media speculation.

The case has received heightened national attention in part because Wells was Black and was reportedly the only Black person among the friends with whom he traveled to the island.

His grandfather, Christopher Wells Sr., has also publicly questioned how Wells’ body was ultimately discovered in an area that had been part of the broader search effort.

Meanwhile, video circulating online has added another layer of scrutiny. Footage reportedly recorded on Horn Island on the day Wells disappeared shows a large crowd gathered in the area. Authorities have said investigators are reviewing available video as they work to reconstruct Wells’ final hours.

However, officials have not announced evidence establishing foul play, and public speculation has not been confirmed as fact.

That distinction remains critical as the investigation continues.

According to Associated Press reporting, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said the friends who were with Wells are cooperating with investigators. Authorities have continued working to determine exactly what happened after Wells became separated from the group.

Family Seeks Records, Witness Accounts and Autopsy Findings

With Crump now representing the family, the legal team is expected to seek the release of relevant records, witness information and autopsy findings while conducting its own review of the case.

The demand for transparency comes as Wells’ mother and relatives continue asking anyone who was on Horn Island that day to provide photos, videos or other information that could help establish a clearer timeline.

Crump said the family is determined to learn the truth.

“His family deserves answers,” he said. “They deserve the truth.”

Wells was a student-athlete and football player whose death has prompted an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends, teammates and supporters across the country.

A GoFundMe established to support his family has also drawn thousands of donations as the community rallies around them during the investigation and funeral preparations.
