Masked Patriot Front Members March Through Washington, D.C.

Patriot Front DC March Draws Masked White Supremacists to Capital on America’s 250th Birthday

Hundreds of masked members of Patriot Front marched through Washington, D.C., on the Fourth of July, carrying Confederate flags and chanting “Reclaim America” as the nation celebrated its 250th anniversary.

The Patriot Front DC march moved through areas near Union Station, Capitol Hill and Eastern Market on Saturday, July 4, with members dressed in coordinated clothing, white face coverings and sunglasses. Videos and photographs showed participants carrying Patriot Front banners, Confederate flags and American flags, including some displayed upside down.

“Reclaim America, reclaim America,” marchers could be heard chanting in video captured near Union Station by WTOP reporter Mitchell Miller, who reported that the group also called for the removal of immigrants.

The march unfolded in the heart of the nation’s capital as crowds gathered for major America 250 events, fireworks and other Independence Day celebrations. Reuters reported that hundreds of masked Patriot Front members participated and later left the city by Metro toward Maryland. D.C. police monitored the demonstration and reported no arrests or incidents connected to the march.

Masked Marchers Carry Confederate Flags Through Washington

NBC Washington reported that the group marched across Capitol Hill carrying a mix of Confederate and American flags, some of them upside down. Other footage appeared to show members near the Eastern Market Metro station.

Images from the day also showed masked participants wearing apparent Patriot Front gear while riding public transit. The sight of the coordinated group filling Metro cars drew particular attention online as ordinary passengers traveled alongside them.

The Fourth of July demonstration placed the group’s message against the backdrop of a national celebration centered on the 250th anniversary of American independence. The broader festivities in Washington included events on and around the National Mall, a presidential address and a major fireworks display.

Patriot Front has used the phrase “Reclaim America” during previous public demonstrations. Similar chants were heard during the group’s earlier marches, part of a strategy that extremism researchers say relies heavily on coordinated public appearances, matching uniforms and highly visible propaganda.

What Is Patriot Front?

The Anti-Defamation League identifies Patriot Front as a white supremacist group formed in 2017 after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. According to the ADL, the organization emerged from Vanguard America and has become one of the country’s most visible white supremacist groups through flash demonstrations and propaganda campaigns.

The group is led by founder Thomas Rousseau, who was also seen during Saturday’s demonstration, according to published reports. The George Washington University’s Program on Extremism traces Patriot Front’s formation to a split involving former members of Vanguard America following the Charlottesville rally.

Patriot Front has staged demonstrations in cities across the country, frequently using American imagery while promoting white nationalist and anti-immigrant ideas. The ADL says the group has been especially active in organizing public events and distributing white supremacist propaganda.

The organization also drew national attention in June 2022 when authorities arrested 31 people affiliated with Patriot Front near a Pride event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Police said the men were found packed inside a U-Haul truck with riot gear and accused them of planning to riot near the event.

March Comes During America’s 250th Anniversary

The timing of the Patriot Front DC march added another layer of tension to a Fourth of July already carrying historic significance.

As Americans marked 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, masked members of a white supremacist organization moved through the capital carrying Confederate symbols and chanting about reclaiming the country. The demonstration occurred near some of the nation’s most recognizable institutions and alongside visitors who had traveled to Washington for the anniversary celebration.

D.C. authorities monitored the march as a First Amendment assembly. Reuters reported that police said no arrests or incidents occurred, while other reporting documented interactions between marchers, observers and counterprotesters.

The march also renewed scrutiny of how organized white supremacist movements use patriotic symbols and major national events to amplify their message. Patriot Front’s appearance on the country’s 250th birthday was not merely a demonstration in Washington. It placed a movement rooted in white nationalism directly inside a national conversation about who America has been, who belongs and what the country intends to become in its next 250 years.
