‘Comics Unleashed With Byron Allen’ to Replace the ‘Late Show’ on CBS

CBS Announces Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen and Second Allen Media Show Will Take Over Late Night Schedule

CBS is reshaping its late night lineup, with Comics Unleashed with Byron Allen set to move into the network’s 11:35 p.m. slot after The Late Show with Stephen Colbert signs off on May 21.

Beginning May 22, Comics Unleashed will air in the longtime flagship late night hour, while Funny You Should Ask, another Allen Media produced program, will follow at 12:35 a.m., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

CBS Fills Late Night Opening with Byron Allen Block

The move gives Allen a larger presence on the network at a time when both late night and daytime television have been going through major programming changes. Comics Unleashed, which blends a traditional panel format with stand up comedy, had already been airing in a later slot this season. It also previously aired there during the 2023 writers and actors strikes.

CBS previously said the cancellation of The Late Show was a financial decision.

Allen Media Buying Airtime for Both Shows

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Allen is buying time from CBS to air both programs, while Allen Media Group will handle the sale of advertising inventory tied to the broadcasts. That arrangement could create a more profitable setup for the network’s late night hours.

Allen, who serves as founder, chairman, and CEO of Allen Media Group, described the expansion as a major opportunity and said comedy remains essential.

“I created and launched Comics Unleashed 20 years ago so my fellow comedians could have a platform to do what we all love — make people laugh,” Allen said in a statement. “I truly appreciate CBS’ confidence in me by picking up our two hour comedy block of Comics Unleashed and Funny You Should Ask, because the world can never have enough laughter.”

Comics Unleashed has Long Featured Rising Comedians

Over the years, Comics Unleashed has featured comics early in their careers, including Kevin Hart and Roy Wood Jr. The program has built its reputation as a space for stand up talent and comedy driven conversation, with Allen serving as host.

Beyond television production, Allen also owns several major media properties, including The Weather Channel, Local Now, and theGrio.
