Jay-Z Reflects On The Music, Moments And Mindset Behind His Career While Facing Backlash for Target Partnership
JAŸ-Z is taking fans deeper inside his legacy with a new HBO docuseries built around his music, creative process and three-decade run as one of hip-hop’s defining figures.
The eight-part series, titled “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” features candid conversations between Jay-Z and legendary producer Rick Rubin. HBO has announced the series for fall 2026, though an exact premiere date has not yet been confirmed.
The project arrives as Jay-Z continues celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album, “Reasonable Doubt,” turning the milestone into more than a standard anniversary rollout. From his headlining performance at Roots Picnic to upcoming Yankee Stadium shows, pop-up experiences and special vinyl releases, Hov has been building a full cultural moment around the album that introduced him to the world.
Rick Rubin Joins Hov For Eight Conversations
“JAŸ-Z IN 8” centers on eight conversations between Jay-Z and Rubin, the Def Jam Recordings co-founder often referred to as the “Shaman of Hip Hop.”
The series is expected to explore Jay-Z’s lyrics, life experiences and creative discipline, offering fans a closer look at the mind behind one of rap’s most influential catalogs. In the teaser, the two reflect on how pain can shape art, with Jay-Z explaining, “The pain, we don’t say it’s necessary… but if it’s there — you use it.”
The pairing is notable. Rubin and Jay-Z’s most famous collaboration came on “99 Problems” from 2003’s “The Black Album,” a record that remains one of the rapper’s most recognizable tracks.
A Return To The Spotlight Comes With Debate
The HBO announcement also lands during a highly visible stretch for Jay-Z.
Since returning to the stage at Roots Picnic, the rapper has been at the center of several online conversations. Fans debated his decision to comb out his eight-year-old locs, while his Target partnership drew sharper criticism from some Black consumers who have continued boycotting the retailer over its rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion commitments.

For many supporters, Jay-Z’s latest moves are part of a larger celebration of legacy, ownership and endurance. For critics, some of the corporate partnerships raise questions about timing and alignment.
Still, Hov appears to be letting the moment speak for itself.
HBO Docuseries Adds To Jay-Z’s 30-Year Celebration
With “JAŸ-Z IN 8,” Jay-Z’s anniversary year now stretches from live shows to documentary storytelling.
The fall release window could line up with more stops on his 30th anniversary run, including planned performances in Paris and Los Angeles. Before that, his New York shows are expected to bring fans back to the albums that shaped his career, including “Reasonable Doubt” and “The Blueprint.”
As fans wait for HBO to release the official premiere date, Jay-Z is keeping his message simple.
“Let the magic happen.”
