BigXThaPlug Is Becoming Country Music’s Favorite Rapper

Combining Trap Beats With The Raspy, Tear-In-Your-Beer Tunes, The Texas Artist Offers A Nashville Temperature Check With I Hope You’re Happy

With the release of his new album, the Texas rapper takes a bold swing at country’s audience. The question now: does it last?

A Country-Rap Crossover Album

The first sound on I Hope You’re Happy isn’t a beat but a guitar lick. Then comes Darius Rucker’s voice. From there, the album reads like a who’s who of modern country. Across 11 tracks, BigX partners with names like Jelly Roll, Bailey Zimmerman, Luke Combs, Shaboozey, Tucker Wetmore, and Thomas Rhett.

The concept didn’t start as a carefully crafted strategy. BigX had casually mentioned to Billboard he was working on a country project, which wasn’t true—until Jelly Roll publicly insisted he be part of it. Suddenly, BigX had a full album to build.

Breakup and Heartbreak as Fuel

The album’s emotional core came after a personal split. “What is country music? Country music is heartbreak and liquor,” BigX told the New York TimesPopcast. His title track “I Hope You’re Happy” is framed as a letter to his ex, blending the pain of breakup with country tradition.

Rap Meets Country—and Streaming Numbers Prove It

Whether country purists approve or not, the numbers speak. “All The Way” with Bailey Zimmerman has racked up more than 125 million streams on Spotify. His track with Shaboozey, “Home,” leans heavily into country tropes, drawing both praise and criticism for its mashup style.

Still, BigX has proven he can bridge fanbases. Rap and country audiences, once distant, now overlap more than ever. BigX is cashing in on that reality.

Too Big to Fail, but Not Forever

BigX insists the country experiment is temporary. “I already told my team, as much as I’ve enjoyed this country bag and I’ve enjoyed the people, I miss rap,” he said on Popcast.

For now, I Hope You’re Happy cements him as one of the few rappers to pull off a full country crossover. Whether it’s authentic art or clever commerce, BigX has already changed the conversation—and brought a lot of new fans along for the ride.
