Bexar Appraisal District Changes Name to Clarify Mission

Bexar Appraisal District Announces Name Change to Reflect Centralized Role

The Bexar Appraisal District will soon operate under a new name. Beginning January 1, 2026, the agency will officially become the Bexar Central Appraisal District, following a unanimous vote by its Board of Directors this week.

The change is described as administrative only, with no impact on the district’s legal structure, responsibilities, or services to the public. The district will continue to manage property appraisals for ad valorem tax purposes and oversee exemptions across Bexar County, just as it has for decades.

District leaders say the addition of “Central” better communicates their independent and centralized authority under the Texas Constitution and Property Tax Code. The current name, they note, has led to public misconceptions about the agency’s role, particularly its separation from the local taxing entities that rely on the property valuations it produces.

“The Board of Directors desires to adopt a name that more accurately reflects the independence, core mission, centralized function, and regional identity of Bexar Appraisal District,” reads the official resolution.

Transition Plan Underway

Chief Appraiser Rogelio Sandoval emphasized that the district’s well-known acronym, BCAD, will still be used despite the name update.

“By adding ‘Central’ to our name, we hope to keep our ‘BCAD’ identity that we’ve been known as while reinforcing that appraisal districts are political subdivisions of the state and completely independent from local taxing jurisdictions,” Sandoval stated.

The transition will roll out in late 2025, with updated signage, forms, correspondence, and digital platforms. A public information campaign is also planned to ensure that residents, businesses, and partner organizations are aware of the change and can update their records accordingly.

For more information or questions about the transition, the district encourages the public to visit www.bcad.org or contact (210) 242-2432 or help.bcad.org.
