Talarico Campaign Blasts Cornyn After Senator Calls $4 Gas a “Small Price to Pay”

Talarico Campaign Blasts Cornyn’s Comments, Calling Them Disconnected from Working Families

Texas Senator John Cornyn is facing criticism after comments surfaced this week regarding rising gas prices tied to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

According to reporting highlighted by political outlet The Bulwark, Cornyn responded to concerns about fuel prices increasing across Texas by saying, “I would say it’s a small price to pay,” adding, “If the American people understood, they would certainly agree.”

The comments come as average gas prices in Texas have reportedly climbed above $4 per gallon, putting additional pressure on families already dealing with rising grocery, housing, and utility costs.

Political Fallout Begins

The remarks quickly drew criticism from opponents, including allies of James Talarico, who is campaigning for higher office in Texas.

In a statement released Tuesday, Talarico campaign spokesperson JT Ennis said Cornyn’s comments reflected what the campaign described as a disconnect between Washington politicians and working Texans.

“After 40 years in public office, John Cornyn still doesn’t understand that working Texans are drowning because DC politicians like him are driving up the cost of everything,” Ennis said. “This is exactly what we’re running against: a broken, corrupt political system in Washington that starts foreign wars and drives up gas prices then tells the American people they don’t know what’s best for their families.”

Debate Over Gas Taxes And Foreign Policy

The backlash also revived debate around proposals aimed at lowering fuel costs. The Talarico campaign pointed to Cornyn’s opposition to suspending the federal gas and diesel tax, an idea Talarico previously supported as a way to provide temporary relief to consumers.

As fuel prices continue climbing, the political battle over foreign policy, inflation, and economic strain is likely to remain front and center for Texas voters heading deeper into the election cycle.
