College Basketball Programs Begin Firing Coaches as 2026 Carousel Starts

As the 2025-26 college basketball season winds down, universities across the country have begun parting ways with head coaches in what is becoming the latest NCAA coaching carousel.

Multiple programs have already announced coaching changes following disappointing seasons, while others are expected to follow in the coming weeks as athletic departments evaluate the direction of their basketball programs.

Coaching Changes Begin to Accelerate

Among the most recent high-profile moves, Damon Stoudamire was fired as head coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets after three seasons.

The former NBA Rookie of the Year finished his tenure with a 42-55 record and was dismissed after the team ended the season on a 12-game losing streak and finished last in the ACC with a 2-16 conference record.

Another major move came when Earl Grant was fired by the Boston College Eagles after five seasons.

Grant compiled a 72-92 overall record during his tenure, and the Eagles struggled again this year, finishing the season 11-20 and missing the ACC Tournament.

More Programs Join the Coaching Carousel

Several other programs have also announced coaching changes this season.

Alvin Brooks was dismissed by the Lamar Cardinals after five seasons and a 62-95 record.

Additional coaching changes have occurred at schools including:

Northern Illinois Huskies, which parted ways with head coach Rashon Burno after compiling a 48-106 record over five seasons.
Ball State Cardinals, which fired head coach Michael Lewis after four seasons.
Western Michigan Broncos, which dismissed head coach Dwayne Stephens following four seasons and a 42-84 record.

Other schools have announced upcoming departures or retirements as well, including longtime St. Bonaventure Bonnies coach Mark Schmidt, who plans to retire after nearly two decades with the program.

Why Coaching Changes Are Common This Time of Year

College basketball coaching changes typically accelerate in March, as programs that fail to qualify for conference tournaments or the NCAA Tournament begin evaluating leadership.

Athletic departments often move quickly to start national searches before the offseason hiring cycle intensifies, especially with recruiting and the NCAA transfer portal playing increasingly large roles in building competitive rosters.

As the postseason approaches, analysts expect more coaching changes to follow across Division I programs.
