Hornets’ Second-Quarter Surge Sinks Spurs in 111–106 Loss

Spurs Fall to Hornets After Costly Second Quarter in Charlotte

The Charlotte Hornets outscored the Spurs 35-17 in the second quarter enroute to a 111-106 win last night in Charlotte.

Brandon Miller led all scorers with 26 points while Collin Sexton finished with 21 points including going 5-for-5 from beyond the arc off the bench.

The Hornets surprisingly are the hottest team in the league at the moment going 8-2 over their last ten games and currently riding a six game winning streak.

Despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, the Spurs were able to close the gap to two points 98-100 with 5:04 left in the game but were unable to regain the lead.

A key stat in the game was rebounds. The Hornets outrebounded the visiting Spurs 51-36 including 14 offensive rebounds to the Spurs’ six.

Rookie guard Dylan Harper led the Silver and Black with 20 points off the bench. Harper, a Rookie of the Year candidate, missed only four of his 13 attempts going 9-13.

It was an off night for V-Dub as the Spurs young star struggled on 6-of-15 shooting with eight rebounds. In the first half alone he had only four points, one rebound, and one assist. He finished with 16 points for the game. On the season V-Dub is averaging 24 points, 11 rebounds, and a league leading three blocks per contest.

The loss drops the Spurs from second to third, a half game behind the Denver Nuggets (33-16) in the Western Conference.

The team will have very little recovery time as last night’s game was game one of a back-to-back. The Spurs face the Orlando Magic (25-22) tonight at 6pm at the Frost Bank Center. The magic are 5-5 over their last 10 games and have won their last two games.
