Gayle King Reportedly Considering Options at CBS Amid News Overhaul

King Has Been a Mainstay at the Network Since 2011, When She Joined to Co-Anchor “CBS This Morning” Alongside Charlie Rose

Gayle King may be approaching a crossroads at CBS as the network’s internal turmoil continues to escalate. According to a new report from Variety, King is reportedly considering her options amid a sweeping overhaul of the CBS News division under new leadership, raising fresh questions about the future of one of the network’s most recognizable faces.

Sources cited in the report say changes being weighed at CBS Mornings could directly impact King, who earns an estimated $15 million annually. One insider described that salary as “no longer viable in a weaker media economy,” suggesting the veteran journalist may be evaluating whether to exit with a high-profile farewell or transition into a reduced on-air role as a special correspondent.

Contract Clock and Conflicting Signals

King’s contract with CBS News is set to expire in May 2026, placing her squarely at the center of speculation surrounding the network’s future direction. Rumors of changes to the morning show lineup intensified after Bari Weiss assumed control of the news division, with early chatter suggesting both King and co-host Nate Burleson could be on the chopping block.

King pushed back on those reports last fall, telling TMZ that what she hears inside the building doesn’t match what’s being written publicly.

“All I’ve been told by everybody in this building is that they want me here, they like the job I’m doing. I like the job I’m doing,” King said at the time. “What I’m not going to do is negotiate in the media.”

A Long Tenure Amid a Changing Newsroom

King has been a fixture at CBS since 2011, when she joined CBS This Morning as a co-anchor alongside Charlie Rose. The program was later rebranded as CBS Mornings, with King continuing in her role alongside Burleson and Tony Dokoupil before Dokoupil moved on to anchor CBS Evening News.

Since Weiss’ arrival, CBS has seen a wave of high-profile exits, particularly among Black journalists. In December, veteran anchor Maurice DuBois signed off from CBS Evening News for the final time, closing his broadcast with Edward R. Murrow’s iconic line: “Good night, and good luck.”

As CBS charts a new path forward, King’s decision—whether to stay, shift roles, or walk away—may signal just how much room there is left for legacy voices in a rapidly reshaped newsroom.
