‘Sinners’ Leads Movie Nominations for NAACP Image Awards

The 57th NAACP Image Awards Will Be Feb. 28 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and Televised on BET

Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners dominated the film categories as nominations for the 57th NAACP Image Awards were announced Monday, leading all movies with 18 nods. The film stars Michael B. Jordan, who takes on dual roles as twins, and its strong showing positioned it as this year’s top contender.

Trailing behind was Spike Lee’s Highest 2 Lowest, which earned nine nominations. In television, Bel-Air led the field with seven nods, continuing its momentum as one of the network’s most recognized series.

Jordan is also among the five nominees for Entertainer of the Year, joining Cynthia Erivo, Doechii, Kendrick Lamar, and Teyana Taylor. Last year’s award went to Keke Palmer. Taylor emerged as the most-nominated individual overall, earning six nominations across film, television, and music, while Lamar led the music categories with six nods of his own.

In a statement, Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, said the Image Awards serve as a declaration to the community that Black creativity, excellence, and humanity are seen and affirmed across every space where stories are told. He added that this year’s nominees honor the past, celebrate identity, and demonstrate the power of storytelling to move culture forward.

The NAACP also introduced two new award categories this year: Outstanding Literary Work, Journalism and Outstanding Editing in a Motion Picture or Television Series, Movie, or Special. The journalism category recognizes excellence in nationally distributed reporting that impacts the Black community, while the editing category highlights post-production work that strengthens storytelling.

The 57th NAACP Image Awards will be held Feb. 28 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and televised on BET. Public voting is open in select categories through Feb. 7.
