Spurs Surge Into West’s Elite as Wemby’s Injury Looms

December Dominance Puts Spurs in Contention With Wembanyama’s Health Front and Center

The Spurs finished out 2025 by going 11-3 in the month of December, a league best.

Despite losing to the Blazers at home last Saturday 115-110, the Silver and Black sit firm in second place in a tough Western Conference. They lead the third place Lakers by two games and trail the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder by four games. The Spurs have owned the champs this season defeating them in all three matchups thus far.

As they go into Tuesday’s matchup against Memphis, the team may again be without the services Wembanyama. The big man suffered a hyperextended left knee with 10:32 to play in the fourth quarter against the Knicks which forced an early exit for the kid. MRI results yielded no structural damage to the joints or ligaments, a huge break for the team. He’s been listed as questionable for Tuesday’s contest.

This iteration of the Silver and Black has emerged as a serious threat in the West and a challenge to OKC’s dominance. With the exceptional depth the roster offers, the team is constructed and poised to not only make the playoffs but make a deep run as well.

The key to success however runs through the Frenchman. Through his first 21 games of the season, V-Dub  has averaged 24 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks while shooting 53% from the field and 37% from 3-point range. Those numbers are all top-three among all NBA centers. Impressive numbers for sure especially considering he’s done so while on a minutes restriction for the bulk of the season.

“We’ll have to see how it goes,” Johnson said. “But it’s going well. We all want him to play. I know he’s chomping at the bit. We’ll get him out there as soon as we can while not sacrificing or compromising anything.”

While Coach Mitch Johnson has found a way to guide the team through injuries, V-Dub has to be healthy for the long term success the team is seeking. The Spurs are 10-4 without Wembanyama this season. They’re 15-6 when he plays.

In other Spurs news…

Devin Vassell, has been ruled out as he continues to deal with a left adductor strain. He’s bringing 15 points per game to the table for the Spurs on the year.

Hopefully the team can get back to full strength quickly as they face a tough stretch in the next seven days with games against the the Lakers, Boston, Minnesota and Oklahoma City.
