What in the Hunger Games? Social Media Reacts With ‘Hunger Games’ Comparisons to ‘Patriot Games’

President Donald Trump announced plans for a new athletic competition he’s calling the “Patriot Games,” a four-day youth sports event intended to be part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebration in 2026.

Trump shared the announcement in a video released Thursday, Dec. 18, by Freedom 250, the group organizing events around the nation’s holiday. He described the overall celebration as “the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen.”

“We’ve already had big celebrations to commemorate the 250th birthdays of the Army, the Navy and the United States Marines,” Trump said in the video. “But there is much, much more to come. We’re going to have a good time.”

According to Trump, the Patriot Games would take place in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2026 and feature what he called “an unprecedented four-day athletic event” with top high school athletes from across the country. The competition would include one young man and one young woman from every U.S. state and territory, though no specific sports or selection process have been announced.

While discussing the games, Trump also referenced his administration’s stance on transgender athletes.

“I promise there will be no men playing in women’s sports,” Trump said, reiterating language tied to an executive order he signed in February titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” which seeks to bar transgender women from competing on women’s teams. “You’re not gonna see that. You’ll see everything but that.”

The announcement of the Trump Patriot Games quickly sparked comparisons online to The Hunger Games, the popular book and film series centered on a dystopian competition where young people from different districts are forced into a televised showdown.

Several social media users drew parallels between Trump’s description of one young man and one young woman representing each state and territory and the fictional premise of the series.

The comparisons were amplified by prominent Democratic governors. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) shared a meme referencing The Hunger Games, while California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) posted a clip from the movie franchise in response to the announcement.

The Freedom 250 website offered limited additional details, stating only that the competitors would “light the torch for a new generation of Americans,” with events leading up to a live final day in front of an audience.

The Patriot Games are just one piece of a much larger slate of events Trump previewed. He also announced plans for:

  • A state fair on the National Mall
  • What he described as “the largest fireworks display in the world”
  • A National Garden of American Heroes, featuring statues honoring what he called the nation’s “all-time greatest Americans”
  • A proposed triumphal arch in Washington, D.C.

Trump also revisited an earlier tease that a UFC championship event could be held as part of the anniversary festivities, potentially near the White House. He confirmed that UFC President and CEO Dana White, a longtime ally who supported Trump at the 2024 Republican National Convention, would be involved.

“It’ll be the greatest champion fighters in the world, all fighting that same night,” Trump said. “The great Dana White is hosting, and it’s going to be something special.”

Trump first outlined his vision for the 250th anniversary during remarks at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on July 3, where he said celebrations would take place nationwide, including at national parks, battlefields and historic sites.

“We’re going to build a little [octagon],” Trump said at the time, referring to the UFC event. “We’re not — Dana is going to do it. Dana is great, one of a kind.”

Earlier this month, Trump said the UFC event is expected to take place on June 14, 2026, and would include eight to nine championship fights, according to USA Today.

As with much of the Freedom 250 rollout, details remain sparse. What’s clear is that Trump is positioning America’s 250th birthday not as a single day, but as a year-long spectacle — part youth sports showcase, part patriotic festival, part campaign-era bravado, all wrapped in red, white and very familiar branding.
