Four Decades Later, Raven-Symoné Remains a Multigenerational Icon
American actress, singer, director, comedian, and child star icon Raven-Symone celebrates her 40th birthday today. The multihyphenate, whose work also spans nearly four decades, rose to prominence in her breakout role as Olivia Kendall, the wise-cracking stepdaughter of Denise Huxtable in the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. Symone starred on the show from 1988 to the shows series finale in 1992. Following the conclusion of the show, the then 7 year old branched out into music, becoming the youngest person to ever sign with MCA Records and released her debut album Here’s To New Dreams.
From 1992 to 2001, Raven starred in a myriad of television shows and films- from Hanging With Mr Cooper from 1993 – 1997 and then scoring box office success with the Dr. Dolittle franchise starring fellow comedian juggernaut Eddie Murphy. But Raven is best known for her groundbreaking eponymous show That’s So Raven. Running from 2003 – 2007, the show was a ratings success and helped usher in a new era of programming that was pivotal for young Black actors and actresses like Symone.
Writer Liv Facey, in her 2023 article for Refinery29.com,“How ‘That’s So Raven’ Raised A Generation Of Black Girls Like Me”, writes, “Raven-Symoné was the youngest Black woman to have a TV show named after her. The show proved stereotypes surrounding Black girls being unable to lead hit shows wrong, and Raven paved the way for Zendaya, Keke Palmer and China Anne McClain to excel on their own shows with Black girls at the helm.” Concurrently, Symone was also a part of The Cheetah Girls, one of the best selling girl groups of the 2000’s.
Following the conclusion of That’s So Raven in 2007, the then 22 year old was at a crossroads career wise. Growing up in the industry from the age of three, much of her life and outlook had been formed by cameras, agents, movie/tv sets, and red carpets. She has been outspoken about this time in her life as trying to grow and mature while still reconciling the idol and icon she was at that time. She then transitioned into more adult oriented content such as her year stint on ABC’s talk show The View, eventually reprising her role as Raven Baxter in the spin-off of That’s So Raven, Raven’s Home.
Symone has also become an LGBTQIA+ icon,having been outspoken about her sexual identity. Following a controversial 2013 tweet and interview with Oprah, Raven became a lightning rod of social media commentary. Writer Kelly Wynne, in her 2023 article for People.com, “Raven-Symoné Recalls Feeling ‘Very Vulnerable’ When Coming Out: ‘There Were a Lot of Challenges’”, writes, “Nearly 10 years after she came out, Raven-Symoné is reflecting on the difficulties she faced while on the journey to embrace her identity. ‘There were a lot of challenges,’ the Raven’s House star, 37, told E! News as she accepted an Icon Award at the 9th Annual Better Brothers Los Angeles Truth Awards. ‘There was the crumbling of the wall that I had put up for so many years,’ she continued. ‘And I felt very vulnerable, it was an interesting wound that was opened up in public.’”
Now 40 years old, happily married to her wife Miranda Madday, and continuing to light up tv screens and phone screens, Raven-Symone is widely seen as an icon to many generations who grew up watching her. Today she celebrates her 40th birthday.
