Veterans Day Ceremony Includes Buffalo Soldiers, Local Leaders and Youth

Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers Association Marks Veterans Day at San Antonio National Cemetery

The Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers Association participated in the 2025 Veterans Day Commemorative Ceremony on Tuesday at San Antonio National Cemetery. The event included veterans, elected officials, community organizations and community residents.

Guest speaker Brig. Gen. Freddy L. Adams II delivered remarks outlining the history of service, the significance of Veterans Day, and the ongoing responsibilities tied to military duty. His address referenced the contributions of Buffalo Soldiers and their place in national military history.

City and county leaders were present, including San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones and Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai.

The 2025 Veterans Day Commemorative Ceremony at San Antonio National Cemetery opened with the posting of the colors by Sam Houston High School JROTC and musical selections from the Texas Children’s Choir.

Trooper Jerry Cheatom served as master of ceremony, with Trooper Larry Carter giving welcome remarks and introducing keynote speaker Brig. Gen. Freddy L. Adams II.

Chaplain (Captain) Harris Doyle delivered the invocation and benediction. The program also included a history presentation, the reading of the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers Memorial List, and three volleys of rifle fire and taps by the Fort Sam Houston Memorial Services Detachment before the retiring of the colors.

Mayor Jones addressed the crowd with energy and gratitude. “First of all, can we give it up for the choir? Y’all have done such a great job,” she said, drawing cheers from the audience. She then thanked the Sam Houston Junior ROTC program, noting the importance of youth involvement in commemorating Veterans Day and recognizing that “among them will be our future veterans.”

She closed her remarks with a heartfelt message:

Veterans Day continues to serve as a national reminder of the service and commitment of those who have worn the uniform. Across the country, communities pause to recognize the men and women who have supported national defense in every branch and era, ensuring their contributions remain documented, acknowledged, and preserved for future generations.
