Spurs’ 5-Game Streak Snapped in Phoenix Blowout

Spurs Fall Hard in the Desert, Dropping Their First Game of the 2025–26 Season

After beginning the 2025-26 season 5-0 for the first time in franchise history, the Spurs suffered their first loss of the young season Sunday in the desert getting blasted by the Suns 130-118. The game itself was nowhere near as close as the final score would suggest however.

The team trailed by 18 at halftime and were never able to close the gap as Phoenix found the antidote to neutralize V-Dub, holding him to only four first half points.

The 7-foot-4 Wembanyama — who also had six turnovers — had averaged 30.2 points and 14.6 rebounds during the team’s 5-0 start. The Spurs big man was held to just nine points and nine rebounds on 4-14 shooting and only hitting one of his six three point attempts. More importantly, he didn’t shoot a single freethrow in the contest.

It was the first time he was held to fewer than 10 points since Oct. 30, 2024, when Oklahoma City limited him to six.

Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 26 points while Keldon Johnson scored 19 off the bench. Devin Booker scored 28 points to lead the Suns while Grayson Allen and Ryan Dunn each added 17 points apiece.

The Spurs went into Sunday’s matchup against the Suns as the league’s best defensive team holding opponents to only 105 points per game and second in opponents fg% holding opponents to 40% shooting.

Torched Behind the Arc

The team couldn’t stop a toddler from stealing a cookie however as they gave up 130 points while allowing Phoenix to shoot an eye popping 58% from the field. The Suns also torched the Spurs behind the arc by shooting 57% on 19-33 attempts.

To add insult to injury, the team lost #2 draft pick Dylan Harper to a strained calf in the Second Quarter. He is expected to miss multiple weeks as a result. Harper is averaging 14 points, four rebounds and four assists in his rookie campaign.

The Spurs will have an opportunity to right the ship Wednesday as they travel to the City of Angels to face Luka Doncic and the Lakers.
