Baltimore Ravens’ Defense Is Wasting Lamar Jackson’s Prime

Injuries and Cap Strain Are Crushing the Ravens’ Defensive Unit

The Baltimore Ravens are 1–3, and Lamar Jackson’s prime years are being wasted by one of the NFL’s worst defenses. Once a hallmark of the franchise, the unit has collapsed in 2025, allowing 133 points in four games, ranking near the bottom in yards allowed, first downs, and turnovers.

Injuries and Cap Strain

Key defensive players are sidelined — including Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, Kyle Van Noy, Roquan Smith, and Marlon Humphries. Nearly 30% of Baltimore’s $95 million defensive payroll is on injured reserve. At the same time, Jackson’s contract is ballooning, with a $43.5M cap hit in 2025 and $74.5M scheduled in 2026 and 2027.

Offense Outshined by Failures

Jackson and the offense have scored 131 points in four games (fourth-most in the league), but defensive breakdowns erase that progress. Poor tackling, lack of turnovers, and missed assignments have Baltimore ranked 27th in yards per play allowed.

The Stakes for Baltimore

If the Ravens don’t retool their defense quickly — through free agents, smarter cap moves, and sharper schemes — Jackson’s best years could slip away, leaving Baltimore with wasted potential and tough decisions ahead of 2027 free agency.
