A Nation Asleep at the Wheel

Comfort Has Replaced Courage As America’s Dominant Value, How Comfort Became America’s Greatest Weakness

Donald Trump deploys the National Guard to so-called “lawless” cities like Chicago, while ICE roams through neighborhoods under the pretense of keeping America “safe.”

He posts racist memes mocking former President Barack Obama and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, all while proudly embracing Project 2025 and “Trump 2028” hats in the Oval Office and White House gift shop. Obama was nearly impeached for a tan suit! Yet, we’re just moving along as if this is just business as usual.

Maybe it’s because, since there are no more “No Blacks Allowed” signs, we can marry anyone and use any restroom, we’ve convinced ourselves the fight is finished. But that illusion of freedom is exactly what keeps us docile. Women’s bodies are again under government control. Immigrants are hunted like animals. Schools are forced to hang the Ten Commandments while continuing to banning books. Democrat-led cities are patrolled by ICE and the National Guard. Prices rise, wages stagnate, and diversity programs are cut under the false narrative of “woke” ideology. Still, most Americans scroll past it all as though democracy’s collapse is just another trending topic.

When our enslaved ancestors and civil rights leaders risked their lives for freedom, when women chained themselves to fences for suffrage, Cesar Chavez led the grape strikes, when when the LGBTQ community fought for marriage equality those battles weren’t abstract ideals. They were daily acts of survival.

America Cashed Out Its Conscience

Now since overcoming those injustices, comfort has replaced courage as America’s dominant value. The human right that once fueled marches, strikes, and sit-ins has been replaced by apathy and distraction. Trump’s base had enough conviction to storm the U.S. Capitol for him violent and misguided but undeniably committed.

Meanwhile, the rest of us can barely muster a fraction of that energy to defend democracy itself. We post, we sigh, and then we go back to scrolling and chasing dollars that don’t stretch, still told to be grateful for scraps while billionaires hoard historic wealth.

Does Courage Cost Too Much?

Corporate America and the wealthy elite continue to quietly cash in. From tax breaks and deregulation to stock surges, the rich such as Trump himself, have turned this political chaos into economic opportunity.

So yes, comfort has replaced courage and that comfort is killing us softly. It numbs outrage, quiets dissent, and makes tyranny feel tolerable. Trump and his supporters thrive not just because of their base’s devotion, but because of everyone else’s indifference.

Until then, good night and good luck.
