Meet the San Antonio Women Shaping Lives with Service, Faith, and Determination
There are certain instances, during the course of the passing of time, where we may encounter other people who are capable of being a positive influence or the opposite, As such, it brings to mind, a profound quote, from one of many characters created, by noted author James Baldwin, which states:
“Some moments in a lifetime teach us the value of the human experience, no matter how long or short they are, or how important or unimportant they might seem. What we should hope for is the courage to endure them and the wisdom to profit by them ; When one understands his own pain, he can understand the pain of others! So briefly, but transcendentally, we relieve each other of pain.”
Rooted in Faith: The Servanthood of Elizabeth Standfield Holmes
This issue we are featuring on wonderful women, who have an impact on the lives of many people. I have been quite fortunate to have met Elizabeth Standfield Holmes, a product of the San Antonio community, whose family name, her upbringing and influence helped shape her deep spirituality and instilled in her “a servanthood that taught me and that continues to sustain me.”
Elizabeth, also knows by many, as “Liz” described herself as “being born into a family who loves Jesus, served Jesus, lived for Jesus and knew Jesus for themselves – serving the Lord was number one to everything my parents did.” She also related that her “parents were a unified team, in worship, in parenting my siblings and I, and in sharing a godly love every step of the journey – they truly loved God and His creations.”
Liz also described the many amazing things her “family did together-played, laughed, ate, prayed, sang and worshipped together”, with her parents who “served wherever they were needed.” Those teachings remind her of being shown how to serve, to be patient, to endure, to pray and if the importance of serving others.
Subsequently, Liz has dedicated herself to working with youths, who have special needs and investing in young ladies. She continues her work in San Antonio, helping young girls navigate emotional challenges and providing them with support and guidance.
When asked about what she would want others to take away from her story, she stated “to be committed, to be able to share one’s passion, and to learn patience for our fellow human beings.”
LaJuana Chambers-Lawson: Award-Winning Entrepreneur and Dedicated Public Servant
Moving ahead, we spoke with LaJuana Chambers – Lawson, an Internationally Awarded Business owner, seen on O the Oprah Winfrey Magazine, Forbes, The San Antonio Business Journal, and is a Commercial Realtor, Military Relocation Professional, and Adjunct Professor and a devoted public servant.
To our question, regarding the motivation for her journey, Ms. Chambers-Lawson said:
“A strong sense of duty and community has been my motivations, for as long as I can remember. Growing up, as a part of a village of friends and advocates, I came to know family as the people I chose and who chose me back: A fundamental component of family is duty; I have always had a sense of duty to myself and to my community.”
When asked would she want others to take away from her story, Ms.Lawson replied: “Grow through what you go through; prevail more curious and less curious. When people hear my story they usually say ‘your story doesn’t match’”.
“Coming from where I came from, self-made success is not common. (As) the daughter of a long line of entrepreneurs and investors, I learned the value of time, money and sponsorship at a very young age. I also learned about the importance of community.”
As we look ahead, the roles women are taking on are reflective of how important that results oriented stories must continue to be told.
