Nolan Wells Family Mourns ‘Special Soul’ After Body Found on Horn Island

The Search for 18-Year-Old Nolan Xavier Wells Ended After a Body Was Recovered Near Horn Island, Leaving His Family Devastated as DNA Confirmation Remains Pending

The family of Nolan Xavier Wells is mourning the 18-year-old Mississippi football player after a body was discovered Monday morning near Horn Island, bringing an intensive multi-agency search to a heartbreaking end.

Although DNA testing is still expected to formally confirm the identity of the person found, Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd said there was “no reason to believe it is not him.”

Wells’ family has also publicly spoken as though their son and grandson has been found, sharing emotional tributes and asking the community to give them space to grieve.

“My daughter Christine, and her husband Elmore prayed for a positive outcome but they also had to prepare themselves for the worst,” Christopher Wells Sr., who has been identified as Nolan’s grandfather, wrote in a Facebook post.

“Now that my grandson has been found it’s time for answers, but be mindful they need space and need to grieve there has been enough finger pointing let law enforcement do their job.”

Nolan Wells Search Ends After Body Is Found Near Horn Island

Wells had been missing since around 3 p.m. Saturday, July 4, prompting a search across land and water that continued for two days.

A body was discovered around 8:45 a.m. Monday on the northwest end of Horn Island by a park ranger, according to local reporting. Authorities had been concentrating search efforts on the island while looking for Wells.

Horn Island sits nearly 10 miles off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast and is accessible only by private boat, according to the National Park Service.

The search brought together multiple agencies and volunteer groups, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard and the United Cajun Navy.

A command post was established at the Lake Mars Boat Launch in Ocean Springs as crews coordinated the search.

Wells Was Reportedly With Friends Before He Disappeared

Wells was reportedly with friends on a boat when he was last seen Saturday. His mother, Christine Wonsley, previously said her son had become separated from his phone and that she did not know when he left Horn Island or who he was with.

Those unanswered questions became part of the growing concern surrounding his disappearance as relatives, first responders and community members searched for him throughout the holiday weekend.

Following Monday’s discovery, Wells’ grandfather urged the public to allow law enforcement to continue its investigation rather than engage in speculation or blame.

“It’s time for answers,” he wrote, while also calling for an end to “finger pointing.”

Officials have not publicly announced a final determination about the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance or death.

‘Nolan Was a Special Soul’

Wonsley thanked relatives, community members, first responders and search organizations for the support her family received during the search. “I want to thank our family, friends, community, United Cajun Navy, local law enforcement, and everyone involved for all the love, support, resources over the last few days,” she wrote in a Facebook post Monday.

She said the family was devastated by the loss.

“His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote. “My heartbroken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others.”

She remembered Nolan as someone whose presence left an impact on those around him.

“Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son,” she wrote. “I ask that you please give me and my family time to grieve.”

Young Football Player Had Deep Community Ties

Wells was familiar to many in the local football community.

He played at Ocean Springs High School before continuing his athletic career as a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College.

As the search continued, his college football program publicly asked supporters to pray for his safe return, reflecting the growing concern among teammates, coaches, friends and community members.

Authorities have said DNA testing will be used to formally identify the body recovered near Horn Island. Until that process is completed, the official identification remains pending.

For Wells’ family, however, the search has ended in grief and a demand for both privacy and answers as investigators continue working to determine what happened.
