Jay Z Uses Roots Picnic Freestyle To Answer Drake, Ye, Nicki Minaj And More

After years away from the stage, Jay Z returned Saturday night as the headliner of Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, using the moment to remind the crowd that he still knows how to control a room.

The festival, held for the first time at Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park, brought thousands of fans to the new outdoor location. Local reports said roughly 40,000 people were expected for the festival day, while organizers prepared for about 80,000 attendees over the full weekend.

Jay Z, born Shawn Carter, took the stage with The Roots and delivered a career spanning set that mixed classic records with a surprise freestyle that quickly became the moment everyone was talking about. According to Pitchfork and Rolling Stone, the performance marked one of Jay Z’s first solo headlining concerts in more than five years.

The Freestyle Takes Aim At Drake, Ye And Nicki Minaj

In the nearly four minute freestyle, Jay Z addressed several artists and public figures who have criticized him in recent years, including Drake, Ye, Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash and Jaguar Wright.

Drake appeared to be one of the main targets. The Canadian rapper recently took shots at Jay Z, including criticism tied to his status as an older veteran in the rap industry. Jay Z responded onstage by flipping some of Drake’s own language back at him and pointing to his own longevity, influence and business success.

“The jig is up,” Jay Z rapped, before taking aim at contract language, ownership and what he suggested was a lack of true independence among some of today’s biggest artists.

The freestyle also appeared to address Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, who has had a long and public falling out with Jay Z after years of friendship and collaboration. In March 2025, Ye drew criticism after posting offensive comments about Beyoncé and Jay Z’s younger children, Rumi and Sir, on X.

Jay Z used part of the freestyle to defend his family, making clear that children were off limits. The line landed as one of the clearest responses of the night, especially given Jay Z’s recent comments about how modern rap beef can cross a line when family members are brought into it.

Nicki Minaj, Dame Dash And Jaguar Wright Also Referenced

Nicki Minaj was also addressed after years of public criticism aimed at Jay Z and Roc Nation. Minaj has previously accused Jay Z and Roc Nation executives of owing her money, and later made personal remarks about his appearance on social media.

Jay Z’s response included a reference to Minaj’s husband, Kenneth Petty, and his status as a registered sex offender. Page Six reported that Jay Z also appeared to reference Minaj’s recent public support of Donald Trump during the freestyle.

The performance also included lines that seemed directed at Dame Dash, Jay Z’s former Roc A Fella Records business partner, and singer Jaguar Wright, both of whom have spoken negatively about him over the years.

Jay Z Blends Rap Beef With Classic Records

After the freestyle, Jay Z moved directly into “U Don’t Know,” one of the standout records from “The Blueprint.” From there, he performed several hits from across his catalog, including “Run This Town,” “Dead Presidents,” “Jigga My N***a” and “F**kWithMeYouKnowIGotIt.”

The set also included guest appearances and Philly centered moments. Meek Mill performed “Dreams and Nightmares,” while Jazmine Sullivan joined Jay Z for “Feelin’ It” and also performed “Need U Bad” from her 2008 debut album “Fearless.” State Property members, including Freeway, Beanie Sigel and Peedi Crakk, also appeared during the night, along with Memphis Bleek.

Near the end of the show, Jay Z told the crowd, “I miss this sh**, I’m not going to lie.”

The Roots Picnic performance now sets the stage for Jay Z’s upcoming concerts at Yankee Stadium in July, where fans will be watching closely to see whether the freestyle was a one night message or the start of a larger musical return.
