Cesar Chavez Boulevard Set to Become Durango After Survey Results

San Antonio Moves Forward With Street Renaming After Community Survey

A major street in San Antonio’s West Side is moving toward a new identity after months of community input, with César E. Chávez Boulevard now expected to be renamed Durango Boulevard.

District 5 Councilmember Teri Castillo filed a Council Consideration Request to formally begin the renaming process following a city-led survey that drew more than 18,000 responses.

According to the City of San Antonio, 64 percent of all respondents supported changing the street name, while support rose to 79 percent among residents who live directly along the corridor.

The original proposal centered on reverting the street back to its historic name, Durango Boulevard. However, updated discussions following the survey have shifted toward a different direction, with Durango Boulevard now emerging as the proposed replacement.

Community Input Drives Decision

City officials emphasized that the process has been guided by resident feedback, including survey responses and in-person listening sessions held earlier this month.

“Public spaces should reflect the community’s values and culture,” Castillo said in a statement. “Residents made it clear that it was time for a change.”

The survey results were seen as a strong indicator of community sentiment, particularly among those directly impacted by the street name.

City to Cover Costs of Renaming

One of the key concerns raised during the process involved the financial burden placed on residents and businesses during past street name changes. When the road was renamed in 2011, property owners were responsible for updating addresses, signage, and related costs.

The new proposal addresses that issue directly. Castillo’s request calls for the City of San Antonio to reallocate funding originally intended for the Fiscal Year 2026 César Chávez March to help cover expenses tied to the renaming process, including replacing street signs.

“This provides a practical solution to ensure residents are not financially impacted,” Castillo said.

The Council Consideration Request has been signed by councilmembers representing Districts 1, 3, 4, and 6, signaling broader support across the city.

The item is expected to be placed on the agenda for an upcoming Governance Committee meeting, where officials will review the proposal and determine next steps in finalizing the name change.

If approved, César E. Chávez Boulevard would officially transition to Durango Boulevard, marking one of the most high profile street renaming efforts in recent San Antonio history.
