Jacob Tobey Out as Spurs Announcer After Viral Affair Allegation With Spurs Players Sister

San Antonio Spurs television play-by-play announcer Jacob Tobey is reportedly out after allegations involving his personal life exploded across social media this week.

Front Office Sports reported Thursday that Tobey is no longer the Spurs’ lead play-by-play announcer, citing sources familiar with the situation. The development came after posts shared through Tobey’s Instagram account accused him of cheating on his longtime girlfriend with Loren Waters, the sister of former Spurs guard Lindy Waters III.

Neither the Spurs nor Tobey had publicly commented on his reported departure as of Thursday, and representatives for both could not immediately be reached by Front Office Sports. Local outlets also reported unsuccessful attempts to obtain immediate comment from Spurs Sports & Entertainment.

Viral Posts Spark Affair Allegation

The controversy began after an Instagram Story appeared on Tobey’s account on July 7 featuring a photo of him with his girlfriend and text accusing him of having an affair with Loren Waters.

Screenshots of the post quickly spread across Reddit and other social media platforms before the Instagram Story was removed. According to Front Office Sports’ reporting, Tobey’s girlfriend later indicated on her own social media account that she was responsible for the posts on his account and that their relationship had ended.

The allegations remain claims circulated through social media. Tobey has not publicly confirmed the alleged affair, and Loren Waters has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Loren Waters is a filmmaker and the sister of Lindy Waters III, who played for San Antonio during the past season.

Tobey joined the Spurs in 2024 as the franchise’s television play-by-play announcer, replacing longtime broadcaster Bill Land and working alongside former Spurs star Sean Elliott. The team officially announced his hiring in October 2024.

Before coming to San Antonio, Tobey worked at Denver’s 9NEWS and called games for outlets including Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network. Front Office Sports included him on its 2025 list of rising play-by-play broadcasters, describing his rapid ascent in sports media.

His reported exit is especially abrupt because Tobey had recently announced a multiyear extension to remain with the Spurs, according to reporting published in June.

The departure also creates a high-profile opening in San Antonio following the Spurs’ run to the NBA Finals. The franchise’s young core, led by Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, has made the television play-by-play role one of the more attractive broadcast vacancies in professional basketball.

For now, the Spurs have not publicly announced who will replace Tobey or formally detailed the circumstances surrounding his reported departure.
