Tim Duncan Documentary “The Boy from St. Croix” to Premiere at Austin Film Festival
With just a little under a decade since Tim Duncan retired, his presence in Spurs culture has never wavered, and is rivaled only by Wemby’s rising star status – which is modeled after Duncan’s own success and the road he paved while in the league. With sports documentaries on the rise in recent years, it’s about time someone came along and made one about the San Antonio legend and one of the NBA’s all-time greats, and it’s even more fitting that that person is someone who knows Tim better than anyone else.
Scott Duncan Steps Behind the Camera
Tim’s older brother, Scott Duncan, is an accomplished filmmaker with several Emmy awards wins and nominations for his work, which includes directing various documentaries as well as working on some of the main title sequences for TV shows like “Survivor.” His most recent project is called “The Boy from St. Croix,” and is all about the life and career of beloved Spurs icon, his little brother, Tim Duncan.
From Swimming Dreams to Basketball Greatness
Tim has always been somewhat of an anomaly in the NBA. Hailing from the Virgin Islands, with a quiet demeanor and a trained eye for the fundamentals of the game (hence his nickname, The Big Fundamental), Duncan began his athletic career aspiring to follow in his sister’s footsteps as an Olympic swimmer. His dreams changed course when, in 1989, Hurricane Hugo came sweeping through the island, destroying its only Olympic-sized swimming pool. Though Duncan had never even really touched a basketball until the ninth grade, he transitioned his swimming goals to hoop dreams and never looked back.
A Rare Glimpse Into Duncan’s Private Life
Parts of Duncan’s origin story and his ascent to greatness have become common knowledge for Spurs fans, and have worked their way into his lore as a San Antonio icon. However, Duncan is still a very private person, so there is a lot of mystery surrounding his early days, pieces of his past and his life behind the scenes that he’s never disclosed publicly. “After decades keeping the world at arm’s length, Tim Duncan reveals himself in this intimate portrait of a singularly competitive force who found basketball as an outlet for his drive, becoming one of the world’s most famous athletes even as he never lost his connection to his island home,” reads the film’s synopsis. Spurs fans all across the city (and the world) will now get the chance to become acquainted with Tim Duncan in a new light.
Premiere at the Austin Film Festival
“The Boy from St. Croix” will make its world premiere at this year’s Austin Film Festival, which is scheduled for Oct. 23rd through the 30th. Be on the lookout for a streaming release in the months to follow.
