Trump Tested the Limits on Using the Military at Home. If Elected Again, He Plans to Go Further

During his first term as president, Donald Trump tested the limits of how he could use the military to achieve policy goals.

If given a second term, the Republican and his allies are preparing to go much further, reimagining the military as an all-powerful tool to deploy on U.S. soil.

He has pledged to recall thousands of American troops from overseas and station them at the U.S. border with Mexico. He has explored using troops for domestic policy priorities such as deportations and confronting civil unrest. He has talked of weeding out military officers who are ideologically opposed to him.

Trump’s vision amounts to a potentially dramatic shift in the role of the military in U.S. society, carrying grave implications for both the country’s place in the world and the restraints that have traditionally been placed on domestic use of the military.

Countdown to Early Voting in Texas: Presidential, Senate, and City Council Propositions Heat Up

With Early Voting Less Than a Week Away, Here’s What You’ll See On The Ballot

Early voting in Texas is fast approaching, with less than a week to go before voters begin casting their ballots for crucial state and national races. The upcoming elections will be pivotal, as Texans decide on everything from local representatives to the next U.S. president. Early voting is a vital opportunity for residents to make their voices heard before Election Day.

San Antonio City Council Propositions on the November Ballot

San Antonio voters will decide on several key propositions this November aimed at modernizing the city charter and improving local governance. Proposition A introduces a definition of “conflicts of interest,” while Proposition B cleans up outdated language in the charter. Proposition C removes the term limits and salary cap for the city manager, providing more flexibility in their employment terms. Proposition D allows city employees to participate in local politics under certain conditions. Proposition E raises salaries for the mayor and City Council members, tying future increases to the area’s median income. Finally, Proposition F extends City Council terms to four years while maintaining the eight-year limit on service.

Allred vs. Cruz: The High-Stakes Senate Race

One of the most closely watched races in Texas is the Senate battle between Republican incumbent Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger Colin Allred. Both candidates have been fiercely campaigning, with Allred aiming to flip the seat in a traditionally red state. Tuesday evening, the Texas senatorial debate between the two highlighted key issues like immigration, healthcare, and the economy, giving voters a glimpse of the stark contrasts in their platforms.

The Race for the White House

The race for the presidency is another focal point for Texas voters, as the state could play a significant role in deciding the outcome. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are locked in a competitive battle, with both parties working to energize their base. The outcome of this election could have profound implications for both Texas and the nation, as voters weigh in on issues like the economy, healthcare, and civil rights.

As early voting starts next week, the political landscape in Texas is heating up, and every vote will count in determining the future of the state and the country.

Bath & Body Works Pulls Candle After Controversy Over KKK Imagery

Bath & Body Works has removed a winter-themed candle from its lineup after online commenters compared its design to imagery associated with the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). The candle, named “Snowed In,” featured a label with a stylized paper snowflake, which many social media users said resembled the hoods worn by members of the KKK, one of the most notorious hate groups in the United States.

Candle Design Draws Backlash for Resembling KKK Symbol

Social media erupted with criticism over the candle’s design, with many users pointing out its unfortunate resemblance to the KKK’s hoods and robes. The KKK’s hood has long been considered a hate symbol, according to the Anti-Defamation League. In response to the controversy, Bath & Body Works swiftly pulled the candle from its stores and website, stating that the design choice was unintentional.

Bath & Body Works Apologizes and Pulls Controversial Candle

Bath & Body Works issued an apology, acknowledging the concerns raised by customers. A company spokesperson told CNN, “We are committed to listening to our teams and customers and fixing any mistakes we make, even those that are unintentional like this one.” The brand is now evaluating its design process to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Candles are a key part of Bath & Body Works’ product line, accounting for nearly 40% of the retailer’s annual holiday sales, according to analysts. The brand has built a reputation for its seasonal and holiday-scented candles, making the “Snowed In” controversy particularly notable during this busy time of year.

Candle Reddit Users Criticize the Design as a “Klandle”

Reddit users were quick to call out the design, referring to the candle as a “klandle” and a “Klan Krismas Kandle.” Some customers who attempted to order the candle after the controversy found their orders canceled by the company. Despite its removal from Bath & Body Works, listings for the candle appeared on eBay, with one seller pricing it at $350.

North Carolina Football Player Tylee Craft Dies from Rare Lung Cancer at 23

(AP) — North Carolina football player Tylee Craft died Saturday morning from a rare form of lung cancer, coach Mack Brown said.

Brown made the announcement in his postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech. Craft was 23.

“This young man fought so hard for his two and a half years,” Brown said. “The doctors told us he outlived what he should’ve. And he did it with the spirit, he did it with a smile on his face, he didn’t miss a meeting, he didn’t miss practice, he coached these other incredible young people.”

UNC had honored Craft — who was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer in March 2022 — during Saturday’s football game, which also happened to be the team’s annual Cancer Awareness Game. Friends and family members wearing shirts bearing Craft’s name and number were recognized during an on-field ceremony.

Wide receiver J.J. Jones wore Craft’s jersey with his No. 13 and last name against the Yellow Jackets.

Brown told reporters he didn’t learn of Craft’s death until after the game but sensed something had happened after sharing an emotional hug with Craft’s mother at the end of the first quarter.

“I think the family feels the love and they’ll continue to feel the love,” Brown said. “What we’ve got to do is be strong, and pray for strength for us as leaders, to help these guys on the field and off the field. … So more than ever before I have got to step up and be stronger for them and make sure that I can help them manage the stuff and move forward in their lives.”

UNC football also announced Craft’s death in a statement posted on social media, followed later by a tribute video to Craft’s memory. Additionally, the UNC men’s basketball team wore shirts bearing Craft’s name and number for its intrasquad scrimmage at the Smith Center following the football game, and had a pre-scrimmage moment of silence in Craft’s honor.

Craft, from Sumter, South Carolina, played in seven games at receiver and on special teams as a true freshman in 2020, and four games in 2021 before his diagnosis. Still, he had remained present and close to the program.

“Tylee meant so much to so many and affected us in ways we’ll always be thankful for,” the football program’s statement said. “He was 1-of-1 and, while he won’t be with us in body, he’ll be watching over us with his endearing smile and endless positivity.”

VP Kamala Harris’ “Opportunity Agenda for Black men”

The VP Aims to Energize African American Voters Amid Concerns that Some May Skip the Election Rather Than Vote for Harris or Trump

As Election Day approaches, Vice President Kamala Harris has introduced her “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men,” a comprehensive plan aimed at securing the support of Black male voters, a group whose backing has shown signs of waning. Harris’ proposals include key economic reforms to uplift Black entrepreneurs, with a focus on Black-owned businesses and the growing cannabis industry.

Fully Forgivable Loans for Black Business Owners

A central feature of Harris’ plan is the introduction of 1 million fully forgivable loans targeted at Black business owners. This initiative is designed to address economic disparities and offer significant financial support to Black entrepreneurs, providing them with the opportunity to grow their businesses without the burden of repayment.

Cannabis Legalization and Equal Access for Black Entrepreneurs

Harris has also pledged to legalize marijuana nationwide for recreational use and ensure Black entrepreneurs gain fair access to the cannabis industry. Her campaign emphasized that Black men, who have historically faced disproportionate policing for marijuana use, should benefit from the wealth and job creation within this booming market.

Cryptocurrency Regulations for Investor Protection

Harris’ plan includes new federal regulations for cryptocurrency, aiming to protect Black investors who are navigating the rapidly growing digital currency space. This move is part of a broader effort to safeguard economic opportunities for Black Americans in emerging industries.

Polling Shows Tightening Race Among Black Voters

Despite Harris leading Black voters by a wide margin over former President Donald Trump, polling reveals a concerning trend for Democrats. A recent New York Times/Sienna College poll found that Harris leads Trump among Black voters by a 78%-15% margin. While still significant, this gap is narrower than in 2020, when Joe Biden secured 90% of the Black vote, compared to Trump’s 9%. Similarly, a CBS News/YouGov poll showed Harris with an 87%-12% advantage among Black voters.

This erosion of support, especially among Black men, is raising alarm within the Democratic Party as the race is expected to be razor-thin.

Barack Obama Weighs In on Black Male Support

Former President Barack Obama has also addressed the issue, calling out Black men who may be hesitant to support Harris. He noted that some may not be rallying behind her due to her gender, emphasizing the historic nature of this election, where Harris could become the first Black woman president in U.S. history.

The Stakes in the 2024 Election

With the race tightening and Black voter turnout in question, Harris’ “Opportunity Agenda for Black Men” represents a clear contrast to her opponent, Donald Trump. The Democratic campaign is focusing on energizing this critical voting bloc, which could determine the outcome of the closely contested election. As Harris looks to solidify support, the stakes could not be higher for both candidates.

San Antonio is set to experience its coolest air of the season as the first fall cold front of the year arrives on Wednesday. Experts Warn ‘Crazy Busy’ Atlantic Hurricane Season Is Far from Over

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Nov. 30 and scientists say there is still the possibility for more named storms this year.

That’s because warm ocean temperatures, which fuel hurricanes, are at record-level temperatures.

“As far as hurricane landfalls in the U.S., it’s been crazy busy,” said Jeff Masters, meteorologist for Yale Climate Connections. So far five hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. — and the record is six.

Masters said it’s possible that record will be matched since tropical cyclone activity is expected to be above-average for the rest of October and November.
