“It’s Even Worse In Other Areas…”

Extremely Constraining and Extreme Policies in Focus

As the war on Gaza and Lebanon continues, despite repeated calls that Isreal is committing Genocide, Israel has expanded its attacks on innocent civilians. We can certainly condemn the attacks by Hamas on Israel as a violation of international law but their response should not be to murder innocent people on the other side. Former President Jimmy Carter once described the occupation of Palestinian land as Apartheid, “it’s based on forced separation within the West Bank of Israelis from Palestinians and the total domination and oppression.” Ta-Nehisi Coates in his new book, The Message, discussed his visit to Israel and the occupied West Bank, where he says he saw a system of segregation and oppression reminiscent of Jim Crow in the United States. Coates said, “It was revelatory,” and “I don’t think the average American has a real sense of what we’re doing over there — and I emphasize ‘what we’re doing’ because it’s not possible without American support.”

What Israel is doing to the Palestinians is criminal. They have reduced the argument away from illegal occupation to “rocket fire” coming from Gaza and Lebanon. In much the same way white supremacist supported genocide of the Indigenous people in the United States, the Israeli government is doing the same thing in the Middle East. When some Native Americans attacked Whites, hordes of soldiers massacred every Native person they could find. Whole tribes were destroyed by rampaging racist lunatics. Instead of concentrating on military targets the Israeli government is attacking hospitals, schools, neighborhoods, and refugee camps killing tens of thousands. They use the racist excuse that “terrorists” have embedded themselves in the population so they can kill them all in what amounts to genocide. They don’t want to go in and fight specific targets for that would amount to many Israeli soldiers being killed and the Jewish population would increase their opposition of Prime Minister Netanyahu. Netanyahu is facing criminal charges, and once the war is over will face prosecution after the war. Trump, who wants to claim elections are rigged, is also facing prosecution if he loses the election.

Ta-Nehisi Coates, the son of a Black Panther (original Black Panthers), traveled through the occupied territories and through East Jerusalem as a Palestinian would, getting a sense of what their daily life was like. What he found was racism that closely resembled the racism of Jim Crow law as it was in the United States. Coates discovered that separate roads are used by the different ethnic groups in a way that is racism to the hilt. Coates said on a Democracy Now interview, “When you are on the West Bank, there are separate roads. There are roads for Israeli settlers and citizens of Israel, and there are roads for Palestinians. These roads are not separate and equal; these roads tend to be separate and unequal. It tends to take longer to get where you want to go if you’re a Palestinian.”

Coates said it is even worse in other areas: “If you enter a city like Hebron, for instance, Hebron is quite literally segregated. There are streets that Palestinians cannot walk down. There are streets that Israeli settlers are given complete and free movement of.” Just like Blacks had to use passes during slavery and after, when traveling, Palestinians have to do the same thing. The policies of the Israeli government are racist and many Jews oppose these policies but cannot stop Netanyahu and his extremist block of politicians.

Saying this does not make one anti-Semitic, but speaks truth to power.

Amber Guyger DENIED Parole, Remains In Jail For Killing Botham Jean

‘Lock That Thug Up’: Ex-Texas Cop Who Killed Black Man While He Ate Dessert Thought She’d Get Away with Only 5 Years—Until Parole Board Shuts Her Down

Former Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger was denied parole on Oct. 10 for fatally shooting her neighbor, Botham Jean, in 2018 as he was sitting in his apartment eating ice cream.

After advocating against her release, Alison Jean, Botham’s mother, is finally breathing a sigh of relief, but this won’t be the last battle in the fight to keep her son’s killer in prison. Supporters of the slain accountant will face this again when Guyger next becomes eligible for parole in 2026.

“My family feels a sense of relief having gone through the process and made a strong petition for denial,” Alison told CBS affiliate KTVT. “So news coming in that the board considered our petition is a sense of elation, a sense of relief.”

“She needs to serve her entire 10-year term, which is well below a sentence that one receives for murder. Murder of an innocent man in the comfort of his home, doing nothing wrong,” Alison told CBS News Texas before the decision.

In a strange coincidence, the day Guyger was up for parole would have been her son’s 33rd birthday.

Guyger, who lived a floor above Jean in a Dallas apartment building, claimed in her defense that she came home exhausted from a long work day and mistook his apartment for her own. His front door was reportedly ajar, and she opened fire on the innocent 26-year-old, thinking he was an intruder.

In 2019, she was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years behind bars, but she has been trying to overturn the conviction ever since, exhausting all of her appeal options. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to review her case in 2022.

Guyger’s request for parole last month, halfway through her sentence, ignited a firestorm of outrage. A petition organized by Jean’s supporters garnered more than 6,000 signatures urging the courts to block her release.

“Allowing Amber Guyger to be released early would not only be a disservice to Botham Jean’s memory but also to the principles of justice and accountability,” stated the petition.

“We believe that Amber Guyger should serve her full sentence as a reflection of the gravity of her actions and to uphold the integrity of our justice system,” it continued.

During their deliberations, the Texas Parole Board interviewed Jean’s family on Oct. 7, and his sister, Allisa Charles-Findley, was pleased with their speedy denial.

“I wasn’t expecting a response so quickly,” she told ABC affiliate WFAA. “We were interviewed on Monday by the parole commissioner — the lead commissioner. It feels like a load lifted.”

“So we have another two years of peace before we have to go through that again,” she continued. “I will sleep so much better.”

Honoring Bravery and Sacrifice: A Night of Inspiration and Reflection at The Patriot Awards Gala

I am Cadet Maj. Kiana Hampton, executive officer for Sam Houston High School’s Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) and I want to share my experience of a lifetime, attending The Patriot Awards Gala at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio on Oct. 3, 2024.

A Night of Honor, Love, and Learning: Meeting the Medal of Honor Recipients

The event, honoring Medal of Honor recipients, was a truly remarkable and enriching experience. The gala was characterized by its atmosphere of love and learning, bringing together a diverse group of honorees and attendees, creating a memorable and impactful gathering. From the moment I arrived, the environment was filled with warmth and positivity. The opportunity to meet so many distinguished honorees was both inspiring and humbling. Each individual I encountered had a unique story and perspective, contributing to the event’s richness. The captivating conversations offered valuable insights into various fields and life experiences.

One of the most impactful stories was that of U.S. Army Spc. 5 James C. McCloughan. His bravery and selflessness saved the lives of many men, and his actions are a powerful testament to the courage and dedication of medics in the field. He was a combat medic during the Vietnam War and displayed extraordinary heroism during the Battle of Nui Yon Hill. Despite being wounded multiple times, he repeatedly risked his life to rescue and treat his fellow Soldiers under intense enemy fire. Hearing his story firsthand was a powerful reminder of the selflessness and heroism that the Medal of Honor represents.

The gala was carefully organized, ensuring every attendee felt welcomed and valued. The setting was beautifully arranged, with thoughtful decorations that added to the overall ambiance of love and respect. It was evident that much effort had been put into making the event a victory.

Inspiring Stories and Memorable Performances

Some of the most memorable presentations included the stories of Medal of Honor recipients, which were incredibly moving. Historical overviews provided deep dives into the history and significance of the Medal of Honor, which were both educational and fascinating.

Early arrival at the gala allowed attendees to engage directly with the speakers, honorees, and other participants, fostering a sense of community and shared learning. The present veterans from various conflicts who shared their experiences and insights offered a diverse range of perspectives. I and a few other JROTC cadets invited to the event were inspired by the stories of the honorees that were particularly impactful, showing the next generation the importance of courage and service.

Being able to watch the performances and being around such positive and uplifting people added a special touch to the event. The performances were not only entertaining but also served as a tribute to the heroes being honored.

A Night to Remember

In all, The Patriot Awards Gala was a wonderful experience that left a lasting impression on me. It was a celebration of honor, love, and learning, bringing together people from different walks of life in a harmonious and supportive environment. I am grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a special occasion and look forward to future events that continue to promote these values.

As 2024 Presidential Election Draws Near, Rhetoric of Fear Looms

The 2024 Presidential Election is less than a month away and rhetoric surrounding the candidates is starting to get more intense

The 2024 Presidential Election is less than a month away and rhetoric surrounding the candidates is starting to get more intense. As Trump has become more reticent on the in person interview front, only giving his commentary through social media and at his rallies, Harris has been making her way to various talk-shows and podcasts such as The View.

A Polarizing Election

This by far has to be one of the most polarizing elections in America’s recent history. According to a recent poll conducted by NBC News, conducted Oct 4 – 8, “Harris gets support from 48% of registered voters in a head-to-head matchup, while Trump gets an identical 48%. Another 4% say they are undecided or wouldn’t vote for either option when forced to choose between those two major-party candidates.”

No Secret

It’s no secret who is on which side. As the 2024 article featuring the poll states, Trump leads on those leaning towards the Republican side- straight, white, men, and Harris leads on those leaning towards the Democratic side- women, women of color, minority groups – African American, Asian, Hispanic, etc. – and LBTQIA. The fact that both Harris and Trump are tied for support speaks to not only the views of citizens in this country but the hate that still exists. Hate that seems to motivate those that are voting for Trump to express their racism and misogyny at significantly high levels. Levels that will be seen and felt for generations to come.

”Bullets Are Flying”

Writer Michael Mathes in his 2024 article for The Japan Times, “’Bullets Are Flying’: Divisive U.S. Political Rhetoric Sees Violence Soar”, writes, “In a neck-and-neck U.S. presidential election, tensions have soared along with the rhetoric: people have been killed, and the country’s presidential candidates and others are in the crosshairs of extremists swept up in the divisive language of the race.”

Intentions of “Bad”

The Oxford Dictionary defines “rhetoric” as “language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect on its audience, but often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content.” Politics is the science of incorporating rhetoric to impact change. Whether that change is good or bad depends on the intentions of the one who is using it. The rhetoric surrounding the 2024 election has created a lot of fear in the United States. Voters have every reason to be afraid, especially if recent events are any inclinations of the type of environment the country will be in post-election.

‘Was In Fear for His Life’: Family Suspects Lynching of Black Man Found Dead Hanging from Beam

Family Suspects Lynching After Alabama Black Man Found Dead Hanging from Beam after Filing Lawsuit Against Abusive Cops

Dennoriss Richardson, a Black man who earlier this year filed a lawsuit against the local police department in Alabama, was found dead last month — hanging from a rope in an abandoned house.

His family believes the 39-year-old man may have been lynched by the cops he was suing from the Sheffield Police Department in Colbert County.

After all, his wife, Leigh Ann Richardson, told local media that police had repeatedly arrested, beaten and harassed him over the years, which intensified after he filed his lawsuit in February, accusing six officers of violating his Fourth Amendment rights through excessive force as well as denying him medical services under the Americans with Disability Act.

“I need answers,” his wife, Leigh Ann Richardson, told the Alabama Media Group. “This was made to look like a suicide. It’s not a suicide.”

She said her husband had been harassed by Sheffield police officers after he filed his lawsuit against them on Feb. 25.

Richardson’s mother, Bonita Richardson, also said her son was under a lot of stress since filing the lawsuit because he feared retaliation from the officers who had already abused him.

Richardson’s attorney, Roderick Van Daniel, is also suspicious of his client’s death and is calling for a federal investigation.

But Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine, whose office investigated the death, said all evidence indicates Richardson took his own life.

“We spoke to family members that said the last time they had spoken to Mr. Richardson, he had been depressed, worried about his future as far as the charges he was looking at. He was just down and out. He was giving some of his property away. It appeared to be an apparent suicide,” Balentine told the outlet.

“The DA’s office ordered an autopsy. The body was sent to the Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville. The cause of death was suicide.”

The Hanging

Richardson’s body was found hanging by a rope from a beam in an abandoned house on Sept. 28 after the Colbert County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a suspicious vehicle, Balentine said.

“We’ve spoken with the mother at length,” the sheriff told AL.com. “She seemed to think that Mr. Richardson was depressed because his estranged wife had been giving him some problems. They had been separated. There were a lot of things going on in Mr. Richardson’s life.”

But Bonita Richardson denied telling the sheriff her son had been depressed.

“My son was joyful,” she said. “He didn’t have any mental issues. He would never kill himself. He would not hurt himself.”

The Lawsuit

Richardson was attending a hearing at the Sheffield Municipal Courthouse over drug charges on Nov. 30, 2022, when the judge told him to step outside the courtroom, according to the lawsuit, which describes Richardson as asthmatic and diabetic.

The lawsuit states that Richardson was attempting to use the restroom when Sheffield Police Lt. Max Dotson assaulted him by grabbing his arms as if to arrest him, even though Richardson had done nothing wrong.

It is not clear from the lawsuit as to why Dotson grabbed his arms, but Dotson was later fired and convicted on assault charges over another incident in 2022. The former cop was also arrested on DUI charges earlier this year.

But after Richardson was transported to jail that day, he ended up further attacked by Sheffield police officer Darien Fountain, who struck him in the throat with the palm of his hand and shoved his head against the wall before falsely charging him with assault, the lawsuit states.

From there, Dotson and Fountain strapped Richardson to a restraint chair for three hours, where they called him a “p_ssy and motherf_cker” and told him, “NOBODY CAN HELP YOU.”

Dotson later sprayed pepper spray into his cell, knowing he was asthmatic, and also stepped into the cell to punch him, the lawsuit states.

Sheffield Police Officer Brett Evans then tasered Richardson under the orders of Sheffield Police Chief Ricky Terry, and he was once again placed in the restraint chair for several hours.

Sheffield police officer Elbert Pope was named in the lawsuit for denying Richardson food and medical care.

The lawsuit mentions another incident from earlier this year on Jan. 9, where he was “viciously attacked” by Sheffield police officers Billy Hall and Sinaca Butcher when he attempted to use a phone in the jail to call 911 for medical help.

Richardson was out on bond prior to his death.

“As far as our investigation goes, we want to be transparent,” Sheriff Balentine said.

“We’ve even placed a call into the U.S. attorney general’s office to see if they could maybe take a look at it also. It’s just a request. Because there is some concern as far as the family goes. We don’t mind them coming in and taking a look at the case.”

Optimistic Predictions: Can the Spurs Reach 40 Wins This Season?

San Antonio Spurs 2024 Season Preview: Veterans, Rising Stars, and Playoff Hopes

The 2024 NBA season is finally upon us. Coming off back-to-back 22-60 seasons, the Silver and Black look poised to actually contend for a playoff spot this year.

The Spurs are 2-1 this preseason with victories over the Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz with the sole loss coming to the Oklahoma City Thunder. At first glance the Spurs seem to have addressed their most significant problem over the last two seasons….youth. The Spurs were the youngest team in the league last year and quite honestly it showed. The bright guys in the front office mitigated that factor by adding veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes to the roster.

Veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes Bring Much-Needed Experience

At age 39, Paul should provide a steady hand on the court and be a bridge between an aging Popovich and a still young roster. Need I remind readers that Chris Paul is the former Mayor of “Lob City” out in Los Angeles, which should be music to VDubs ears.

At 6’8 and in his 12th season, Harrison Barnes is a Swiss Army knife on the court being able to guard multiple positions on defense while also being able to play both inside and outside offensively.

VDubs’ Sophomore Year and the Excitement Around Stephon Castle

Aside from the excitement of witnessing VDubs sophomore season the player that in my opinion has the biggest upside is first round draft pick Stephon Castle. In Castle the Spurs get a more refined version of Kawhi Leonard. Coming into his rookie campaign fresh off an NCAA championship with UCONN, Castle is league ready and should make an immediate impact for the Silver and Black.

Optimistic Predictions: Can the Spurs Reach 40 Wins This Season?

The Spurs have two games remaining in the preseason as they whittle down their roster to 15 players before the regular season opens on October 22nd.

I might be going out on a limb here (the Spurs left me high and dry on my preseason prediction last year of 35-47) but I believe the Spurs will win 40 games and contend for the 9-10 spot in the play-in tournament for a playoff spot.

Time will tell but one thing I can say with certainty; the prospects for success are much better than last season’s dud.

Netflix’s “Starting 5”- What They Really are Thinking Behind the Scenes and On the Court

Netflix’s “Starting 5” Gives Inside Look into The Lives of Some of the NBA’s Most Prominent Players as They Explore Their On and Off Court Challenges and Triumphs

Last week Netflix released its new ten-episode docuseries, following a handful of NBA stars speaking on their behind-the-scenes successes and struggles on and off the court during the 2023-24 season. The docuseries comes just as a new NBA season is gearing to ramp up, and it illuminates the realities that many of the league’s greatest stars face, while highlighting their perspectives as regular people dealing with their own regular people everyday trials like fatherhood and juggling home/work life balance.

Per the title, “Starting 5” dives into the perspectives of five of the league’s most prominent players, including LeBron James, Anthony Edwards, Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, and Domantas Sabonis. The series features sit-down interviews and exclusive on-court mic’d up appearances from each of the players, demonstrating various aspects of their home and family lives and their mastery over the sport.

For LeBron, much of “Starting 5” traces his 21-year legacy as the face of the NBA, and how it feels to be an aging superstar in the league – even though he feels like he has a lot more left in him than people think. For Anthony Edwards, the youngest player included in the series at just 22 years old, his story tracks the massive heights he’s already reached so early in his career, as well as his commitment to maintaining this superstar momentum through healthy eating habits and taking care of his body – which isn’t always easy for him. Jimmy Butler’s segment focuses on the importance of holding on to the joy of the sport, and making sure that he doesn’t lose sight of the reason he started playing basketball. Jayson Tatum’s primary goal is bringing a championship to Boston, and Sabonis reckons with feelings of being overlooked due to being excluded from the 2024 All-Star team.

Though each of these players have their own battles, one common theme that unites them is the dedication and endless support for and from their families. LeBron and Tatum’s goofy Dad moments shine through, painting a picture of the reality of being a father as an NBA superstar, and how weeks on the road away from home doesn’t stop them from being superstar parents too. Interviews with Sabonis’ wife highlight how hard it can be having a partner in the league, and Jimmy Butler grapples with the weight of playing through and dealing with his grief in the public eye after the devastating loss of his father. The series also explores the birth of Edwards’ daughter during the height of last year’s season, and the network of family he has in his corner. The importance of family is the heart of “Starting 5,” and proves to be one of the driving forces of the NBA.

The 2024-25 NBA regular season begins next week on October 22nd – checkout “Starting 5” in the meantime.
