The Friends Who Returned Without Nolan Wells Are at the Center of Growing Questions as Investigation Continues
The investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells continues as authorities work to determine what happened during a Fourth of July trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island, where the college football player was last seen alive.
Wells, an incoming sophomore at Southwest Mississippi Community College, traveled to the barrier island by boat with a group of friends on July 4. According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, the group later returned to the mainland believing Wells planned to catch another ride back. When he never returned home, his mother reported him missing, launching a large-scale search involving multiple agencies. His body was recovered near Horn Island on July 6. Authorities have not released an official cause of death, and the investigation remains active.
Focus Turns to Those Who Were With Wells
As investigators continue piecing together Wells’ final hours, questions have increasingly focused on those who accompanied him to the island.
Sheriff Ledbetter has said the individuals who were with Wells have been cooperating with investigators. No one has been arrested, charged or publicly accused of wrongdoing, and law enforcement has not publicly identified the people who traveled with Wells.

Videos of Reported Argument Draw Attention
The case has also drawn national attention after videos circulated widely on social media that appear to show an argument involving Wells before he disappeared. Several news outlets have reported on the footage, and the videos have fueled widespread speculation online. Authorities have acknowledged they are reviewing the videos as part of the investigation but have not confirmed the authenticity of the footage, identified everyone shown in it or stated whether the reported argument is connected to Wells’ death.
Social Media Identifies Friends, But Officials Have Not
While authorities have not released the identities of Wells’ companions, several names have circulated online. According to Atlanta Black Star, the publication reported that it confirmed Wells’ friends—Eli Jax Pitalo, Erick Alcantara, Wyatt Pyron, Warren Hudson and Morgan Seymour—had switched their social media accounts to private. Atlanta Black Star also reported that its reporter reached out to each of them for comment. The San Antonio Observer has not independently verified those identities or the reported account changes, and law enforcement has not publicly confirmed the identities of the individuals who were with Wells.
Family Calls for Transparency
The investigation has generated significant discussion across social media, where many users have questioned why Wells was left behind and whether additional witnesses have information about his final hours. Others have urged the public to avoid reaching conclusions before investigators complete their work.
Wells’ family has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has called for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death. His mother has also appealed to anyone who was on Horn Island that day to provide photographs, videos or other information that could help investigators establish a complete timeline.
Investigation Remains Active
For now, many of the most important questions remain unanswered. Investigators have not announced a cause of death, identified any suspects or indicated whether foul play was involved. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, and additional information is expected as forensic testing and interviews continue.
