Could Texas Deliver the Biggest Political Surprise of 2026?

New Poll Shows Dead Heat Between Ken Paxton and James Talarico in Texas Senate Race

A new statewide poll suggests Texas could be headed toward one of its closest U.S. Senate elections in decades.

The survey found Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic state Rep. James Talarico each receiving 47% support among likely Texas voters, leaving the race statistically tied heading into the heart of the campaign. The results indicate that a relatively small number of undecided and independent voters could determine who wins the seat in November.

A Competitive Statewide Race

Texas has long been considered a Republican stronghold in statewide elections, but the latest polling shows Democrats believe they have an opportunity to compete for a seat that has remained in Republican hands for decades.

While the ballot test showed the candidates tied, the poll also found voters viewed the candidates differently on personal characteristics. Talarico received stronger ratings on honesty and moral character, while Paxton continued to maintain overwhelming support among Republican voters.

Independents Could Decide the Outcome

Political observers say independent voters may become the deciding factor.

The survey found Talarico performing significantly better among independent voters than recent Democratic statewide candidates, helping narrow the Republican advantage. At the same time, Texans continued to express a slight preference for Republican control of the U.S. Senate, a factor that could benefit Paxton if Republican turnout remains strong.

Both campaigns are expected to increase television advertising, campaign appearances and voter outreach during the coming months as the race intensifies.

National Attention Turns to Texas

The contest is expected to draw national attention because of its potential impact on control of the U.S. Senate.

With the candidates tied in one of the nation’s largest states, political strategists from both parties are expected to pour resources into Texas throughout the remainder of the election season.

If the polling trend continues, Texans could decide one of the country’s most closely watched Senate races this November.
