Grokipedia Is a Creation of Musk’s AI Chatbot, Wikipedia Responds: “Knowledge Will Always Be Human”
Elon Musk has launched a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, marketed as an alternative to what he calls a “woke” Wikipedia. The platform, which went live Monday, is powered by Grok—Musk’s AI chatbot from his startup xAI—and promises “AI-verified facts” in place of human editors.
The tech billionaire announced his plans for the site after a nudge from friend and Trump administration AI and crypto czar David Sacks. Musk framed the project as both a political and philosophical challenge to Wikipedia, claiming an AI-driven encyclopedia is “super important for civilization.”
Unlike Wikipedia, which relies on volunteers for edits, Grokipedia locks users out of direct contributions. Instead, edits can be suggested through a form that routes to Grok for review. Early entries reveal that many articles were simply “adapted” from Wikipedia—complete with the required Creative Commons disclaimer—though Musk insists Grok will stop relying on Wikipedia by year’s end.
Despite its claims of independence, Grokipedia’s version of history seems to omit inconvenient details. Donald Trump’s page, for instance, excludes references to his Qatar luxury jet and meme coin controversies. Likewise, Musk’s own biography leaves out the January rally hand gesture widely described as a Nazi salute.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia, responded with understated grace. “Wikipedia’s knowledge is—and always will be—human,” it said in a statement Monday. “Even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”
Founded in 2001, Wikipedia remains the world’s ninth most visited site and a nonprofit cornerstone of the open web. Grokipedia, by comparison, debuts with 885,000 English articles labeled as “version 0.1”—a work in progress that seems more imitation than innovation.
Whether Grokipedia evolves into a credible resource or just another Musk vanity project remains to be seen. For now, it’s an encyclopedia with selective amnesia—AI-powered, billionaire-approved, and suspiciously familiar.
