Hazing Allegations Hit Omega Psi Phi— Again

Hazing Lawsuit Targets Omega Psi Phi and USM Following Severe Injuries to Former Pledge

A federal lawsuit has been filed by Rafeal Joseph, a former pledge of the Nu Eta chapter of Omega Psi Phi at the University of Southern Mississippi, alleging that he was violently hazed during a ritual known as “Hell Night” in April 2023.

The complaint states that pledges faced escalating abuse beginning in December 2022, including theft of food and money, sleep deprivation, intimidation, and threats. The allegations culminated during Hell Night on April 16, when pledges were allegedly struck repeatedly with a wooden paddle made from a two-by-four plank.

Severe Injuries Reported

Joseph was hospitalized and underwent emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. He was treated for bruised ribs, a hematoma, posterior compartment syndrome, and rhabdomyolysis. He has stated that the injuries left him unable to walk for months, ultimately forcing him to withdraw from the university.

Legal Action Against Fraternity and University

The lawsuit names Omega Psi Phi’s national organization, the Nu Eta chapter, the university, and associated individuals. It asserts that university officials were aware of prior hazing incidents but did not act to prevent further harm. Both the fraternity and university declined immediate comment on the lawsuit.

Fraternity’s Public Service Work vs. Internal Practices

Omega Psi Phi is widely recognized for its community programs, civic engagement, mentoring, and voter registration drives across the country. However, the contrast between those public contributions and the allegations raised in this case has prompted questions about the fraternity’s internal accountability.

The fraternity’s dedication to community service may need to be extended more fully to the oversight of its own pledge processes. Ensuring that the values promoted publicly also apply to fraternity members and pledges could strengthen the credibility of its broader mission.

Larger National Context

This lawsuit follows other recent hazing incidents involving Omega Psi Phi. Earlier in 2025, a Southern University student, Caleb Wilson, died after being struck during a hazing ritual tied to another chapter. Several members were charged with manslaughter and criminal hazing in that case.

These incidents highlight a continuing challenge in Greek life: the tension between longstanding traditions and modern expectations of safety, oversight, and accountability.
