Rep. Hawkins Suggests Companies To Write Lesson Plans- Teachers ‘Facilitators’ Hand Them Out To Students

Companies to Write Lesson Plans, Teachers to Just ‘Hand Them Out’?, And Another Special Session for Texas Ed

Hello SAISD Parents and San Antonio Community,

As most of you know, our Governor is still pushing for a special session to resolve school funding. But this week, they invited private schools to testify in an effort to creating a school voucher or education saving accounts by stating this was what Texas needs to do. It’s their belief that by doing this that it would provide a better education for all of our children.

During the session we were provided with a Teacher Vacancy Report which was done to find out why teachers are leaving and what could we do as a state to keep teachers in their classrooms. It stated that all we need to do is increase the basic allotment per student. It’s that simple, yet our politicians are making it more difficult. If they could take the school vouchers off the table and give that money to our public schools then our schools would have more resources. Afterall it was stated that’s the key to keeping our teachers in their classrooms and it would help our children.

The idea that they called a meeting and no one from our public schools was invited seems shady. Then when they talked about curriculum, Rep. Gervin-Hawkins suggested that if we were to come up with lesson plans for the teachers, then they could pass out the work, which could help them become better facilitators. Creating a lesson plan for teachers would give our teachers a break, but our teachers have a degree and a certification to teach in this state. So if all they need to do is pass out work from lesson plans written by an individual or a company, could anyone do this job? From teaching to just passing out work does not constitute a teacher.

This year, the focus is to tear down our public schools and the teachers that work so hard to help all of our children. As parents, we all want what’s best for our children, but we already have so many different charter schools that offer a variety of ways for our children to receive an education that fits their needs. So let’s fund our public schools to ensure that all of our children get a good education and our teachers and staff get a raise. Because the reality is that creating a school voucher or education savings plan would mean that TEA and Governor Abbott and Lt. Patrick wouldn’t have to deal with those schools because they have no accountability to our state.

This is just an update on what is going on behind closed doors in Austin. We will go into a special session either in September or October. We are waiting for Governor Abbott to let us know. Until then, have a great summer.
