Small Businesses Push Back Against Price Hikes to Keep Customers First

We Need To Support Small Businesses Now More Than Ever– With Raising Costs And Squeezing Margins, These Businesses Are Fighting To Keep Prices Steady And Doors Open

As Trump-era tariffs continue to reshape the economy, small businesses across the country are reaching a breaking point. Many entrepreneurs say rising import duties—especially on goods from China—are forcing tough decisions: raise prices, cut labor, or shut down entirely. Yet a growing number are digging in their heels, refusing to pass the cost burden to their customers.

Jeremiah Chamberlain, who runs Corvidae Creations in Hammond, Louisiana, said his 3D-printed toy business was blindsided by steep tariff increases. “We didn’t expect to have this type of panic arise,” Chamberlain said. With bulk filament prices jumping from $14.99 to $17.99 per roll, he abandoned Chinese suppliers in favor of American and Canadian ones. Though the shift meant sacrificing some color variety, it kept prices down. “Nothing’s going to make me raise prices unless it’s a matter of me having to shut the business down totally,” he said.

Main Street Adapts to a Volatile Trade Environment

It’s not just Corvidae Creations. Across America, businesses are being squeezed by duties that have swung wildly—from 10% to 145% and back to 30%—under the Trump administration’s shifting trade strategy. Advocacy group Main Street Alliance reports that 81.5% of surveyed small business owners said they would have to raise prices due to tariffs, while 31.5% feared layoffs.

“Small-business owners are operating on such thin margins,” said Richard Trent, executive director of the alliance. “The least that we could do is give them a modicum of stability.”

Some are using promotions to offset losses. Others, like Carla Minervini of All Fired Up pottery studio in South Carolina, are standing firm. “I would sell everything off and close my business and make a new life for myself before I would increase my prices,” she said. Instead, Minervini has scaled back product offerings and stocked up on materials in anticipation of supplier hikes.

Cost-Cutting Hits Workers and Wages

For Dan and Ashley Jones of Jeans Day Apparel in Indiana, tariffs have already taken a toll. Increased material costs forced them to lay off their part-time student staff. “We have to be able to cut costs somewhere, and labor is the easiest place,” Dan said. The couple now shoulder the full workload, pushing back plans to move the business out of their garage and into a storefront.

“It’s the unknown that’s very scary,” he added.

Product Shrinks, Not Prices

Other business owners are trying to innovate around the problem. Amy Grows of Camas Creek Soap Company in Idaho is reducing her soap varieties by 25% and replacing expensive oils with affordable alternatives. “I’m trying to make a little money for me and give people a good product that they can afford,” she said.

Some Can’t Hold Out Forever

Amelia Morgan, who co-owns Recognitions Awards and More in Illinois, said all four of her U.S. suppliers raised prices by 20% last month. She’s held out as long as she can—but she knows change is coming. “We have to make sure that we stay profitable,” Morgan said. Her company employs six workers who depend on the business to pay their bills. A price hike is now inevitable.

While large corporations like Nike and Walmart have the flexibility to raise prices or shift supply chains, small businesses remain on the front lines of the tariff war. Many say they’re willing to absorb the costs—until they can’t anymore.

Eastside History Needs Your Voice- Survey on Historic Cemeteries

Help Shape the Future of San Antonio’s Historic Cemeteries and Your Community

The City of San Antonio’s Parks & Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Office of Historic Preservation, is currently updating the Historic Eastside Cemeteries Master Plan — and they’re inviting you to weigh in. Residents are encouraged to take a short survey and share their thoughts on how these sacred spaces can be improved, preserved, and better utilized for the community. Whether it’s landscaping, signage, accessibility, or educational programming, your voice matters in shaping the vision for these historic cemeteries.

You can find the survey and other opportunities to get involved by visiting HERE, where the City shares updates, meeting schedules, and public input events. The deadline for this survey is June 10th.

Why Your Voice Matters

Too often, decisions about our neighborhoods are made without us. When you speak up about what matters in your community—whether it’s a historic cemetery, a park, or a street corner—you’re helping shape a future that reflects the people who actually live there. These cemeteries are not just final resting places; they are living records of our history and deserve the care and recognition that comes from community-driven planning.

Share Your Thoughts

Sharing your thoughts ensures that improvements match what the neighborhood really needs—not just what outside planners think might look nice. Participating in surveys and community meetings makes it clear that Eastside voices won’t be overlooked. Your opinions can lead to better programming, cultural preservation, and respectful restoration that honors your legacy and loved ones. Speak up, because your neighborhood deserves nothing less.

Dwayne Johnson’s Hollywood Evolution Begins

Dwayne Johnson’s Career Path Takes a New Turn with Upcoming Projects – Including “The Smashing Machine,” Where the Former WWE Star is Nearly Unrecognizable

Breaking into the Hollywood scene in 2011 with his role in “Fast 5,” The Rock has since been a leading figure in the film industry, amassing a legion of supporters and situating himself as one of the highest-paid actors of all time.

Though his career has been undeniably prosperous, he’s largely been confined to the action-blockbuster blueprint and hasn’t had many chances to show off his ability in dramatic roles. However, several of his upcoming projects seem to point to a change coming for the former WWE personality.

Critics Call for More Range From The Rock

Despite being one of the biggest Hollywood stars of our time, Johnson has long battled criticism for the roles he pursues, with many fans and critics alike noting that he always plays the same character in his movies – the strong-armed, tough-guy hero tasked with saving the world from some cataclysmic threat, typically coercing a few laughs along the way.

Though it’s a formula that usually works – nearly all of Johnson’s films have been smash hits – it’s one that has become slightly stale in recent years, both for the fans and, clearly, for The Rock himself.

“The Smashing Machine” Signals a Bold Shift

The first wave signaling the changing tides of Johnson’s career came with the trailer for “The Smashing Machine” – an A24 backed film starring Johnson as MMA fighting legend, Mark Kerr – slated for release on October 3rd.

Credit: History of Cinema

The trailer shows a rugged and heavily altered (and nearly unrecognizable) Johnson like we’ve never seen before, in more ways than one. Despite being an MMA-focused film, “The Smashing Machine” is a psychological exploration of the famed fighter’s life and struggle with substance abuse, which is a pretty notable tonal shift from Johnson’s typical action-centered, surface-level movie roles.

A24 and Prestige Projects Reshape Johnson’s Image

A24 is widely known as an indie production company, specializing in arthouse and drama-based films, and “The Smashing Machine” will mark their first collaboration with The Rock, though it won’t be the last.

Johnson has already committed to starring in another A24 film called “Breakthrough,” a psychological thriller where he plays a motivational guru. He’s also been cast in a Martin Scorsese film alongside Emily Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio, so it would seem that Johnson is trying to break out of his action-blockbuster stagnancy, shifting his focus to more avant-garde quality projects.

Back in the Ring—But With New Purpose

It’s only fitting that Johnson’s springboard into the world of dramatic acting comes with a movie like “The Smashing Machine.” Even though it’s a role like nothing he’s tackled before, it feels familiar and almost a full-circle moment having him back in the ring. Though WWE and MMA couldn’t be more different, Johnson’s portrayal of the real-life fighter is likely to be grounded in his own experience in WWE theatrics – making him the perfect candidate for “The Smashing Machine,” while allowing him the opportunity to show off his acting chops and set the stage for a new era of Dwayne Johnson, the ‘serious actor.’

New Mayor and City Council to Be Sworn In June 18 at San Fernando Cathedral

New City Officials Face $148 Million Budget Shortfall

The newly elected mayor and City Council members of San Antonio are scheduled to be sworn into office on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 . A ceremonial event titled “Mayor and City Council Blessing” will take place at 3:00 PM at San Fernando Cathedral, marking the official commencement of their terms.

This incoming cohort includes at least five new council members and a new mayor, who will assume leadership amid significant fiscal challenges. City officials project a $31 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2026 and a $148 million shortfall for 2027, primarily due to declining revenues from property taxes, sales taxes, and other sources. The new administration will need to develop a balanced two-year budget by September, with discussions set to begin shortly after the swearing-in.

The “Mayor and City Council Blessing” at San Fernando Cathedral is a longstanding tradition in San Antonio, symbolizing the city’s commitment to public service and community values. Residents are encouraged to attend and support their newly elected officials as they embark on their terms.

From Team Manager to Football Boss, Salute to a True HBCU Trailblazer

Howard’s Game-Changer: Janice Pettyjohn’s Winning Play

Janice Pettyjohn is making major moves at Howard University—again. In 2022, she became the first woman to land a full-time role with the Bison football program. Now, just three years later, she’s stepped into a powerful new position: Director of Player Personnel and On-Campus Recruiting.

Pettyjohn has helped guide the team to back-to-back MEAC titles in 2022 and 2023, earning high praise from Head Coach Larry Scott.

“She created this role through pure hustle and dedication,” he said. “She’s become someone we rely on.”

One of her key priorities? Keeping local talent from the DMV area—D.C., Maryland, and Virginia—right at home.

“We want our homegrown stars to play for their hometown HBCU,” she shared.

But her impact isn’t limited to recruiting. Players like Darius Fox, a senior offensive lineman, say Pettyjohn has been like family. “She helped me stay focused, not just on the game but on life. She brought us together as a unit.”

Her work hasn’t gone unnoticed beyond Howard. In 2025, the NFL invited her to its Women’s Forum—a pipeline for women aiming to lead in football. From managing her middle school team to influencing a Division I program, Pettyjohn’s path proves there’s room for women at every level of the game—and that HBCUs are growing the next generation of leaders.

Age Check Ahead: The Social Media Crackdown in Texas

Texas Lawmakers Push to Ban Minors from Social Media

The Texas Legislature is moving forward with House Bill 186, which would ban minors from creating social media accounts on platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, and others. The bill, filed by Rep. Jared Patterson (R-Frisco), has bipartisan support and would require users to verify their age. If passed, companies would have to enforce the ban by April 2026.

Why Lawmakers Support the Ban

Sen. Adam Hinojosa (R-Corpus Christi), a co-sponsor of the bill, explained:

“Like so many parents across our state, I’ve watched my children grow up in a world that feels less and less safe, not because of where they go physically, but because of where they go online, in spaces that my wife and I cannot possibly monitor at all times.”

The bill would also let parents request the deletion of their child’s social media accounts, which platforms must comply with within 10 days. Any site that allows users to create or share content is considered a social media site. News and sports websites are exempt.

So far, 10 states, including Texas, have passed laws limiting social media access for minors. But this bill would make Texas the most restrictive. Currently, Florida bans kids under 14 from social media, and they’re considering raising it to under 16.

Texas Could Set the Strictest Standard

Another bill, Senate Bill 2420, would require age verification and parental consent for app downloads or in-app purchases. Lawmakers are also looking at House Bill 499, which would require warning labels about mental health risks tied to social media use.

“We have the ability and the power to act today… With House Bill 186, we confront the evil before us and boldly say, ‘You cannot have our children,’” Hinojosa said.

Teens Speak Out Against the Ban

Many teenagers testified at a recent committee hearing, saying that a full ban would harm their futures.

“The harmful content that young people are exposed to online does not disappear when they turn 18,” said Morgan McGuire, a 17-year-old TikToker with over a million followers. “The bill throws young adults into a digital world… without the support systems they had as minors.”

Athletes also shared concerns.

“It will be putting Texas high school student athletes at a disadvantage… Colleges are not only looking at athletic skill and performance, but also an athlete’s brand,” said William Weed, a Texas student athlete.

Mental Health and Safety Concerns Drive Support

Despite the pushback, lawmakers argue the bill is necessary.

“We have countless research stories of peers your age committing suicide and being bullied,” Hinojosa said.

  • 95% of teens aged 13–17 use social media, and over a third use it almost constantly.
  • Nearly 40% of kids aged 8–12 are on social media, even though most sites set the minimum age at 13.
  • Groups like the American Federation of Teachers and American Psychological Association say social media is hurting mental health and education.

Sen. Angela Paxton (R-McKinney) noted that these bills don’t touch online gaming, which also poses risks. Hinojosa responded that social media is just the starting point:

“We’re making something new,” he said.
